I can see that I will need to empty the pool and remove the pitch from the
sides - does anyone know the best way to do this please?
Also, has anyone an alternative way of sealing the pond. (A garden centre
recommended a bright blue sealant paint - but I want more of a natural
look).
Solutions/ideas would be very welcome - many thanks.

You will have a hell of a job removing Bitumen from the inside of you
pond it is very tenacious stuff

Black pond liners are normally the liner of choice for a natural
looking pond anything coloured is in my opinion bound to look worse.
There is a material available in garden centres which looks a little
like gritted roofing felt which is designed to cover the gap between
waters edge and pond edge might help.
How about a Layer of pebbles over the bottom of the pond so that you
see them instead of the bitumastic bottom.

Landscape Services encourage them to grow up bamboo canes pushed
into the ground , when they have grown clear of surrounding plants
paint the leaves with a glyphosate solution (tumble weed, roundup)
this will kill them swiftly back to the roots and save you plants.
