I don't know about Derby but I know an Essex (trade) garden centre that was
giving the stuff away recently. It might be worth your while phoning round.
What do tree surgeons do with the wood they cut down - it gets chopped up and
taken away somewhere? Maybe, depending on why you want the bark, you could
take some off their hands and do them and yourself a favour. Also, and I don't
know your area at all, but I live very near a managed forest and I have bought
or been given bark, wood chippings etc. in the past from the managing agents at
very reasonable rates. I've used the wood chippings under a swing and also
under a garden bench. It's not much good on the compost heap though...

There's a place just across the road from the Wyevale Garden Centre at
Findern (near Derby) that sells bark chippings, but I can't think of the
name of the place, or what category to look under in the Yellow Pages.
I suppose if you're feeling cheeky you could ring Wyevale and ask :-)
