Hi!

I have a 3-4 year old Mountfield S461R PD lawn mower. All working
splendidly up until last weekend when it just cut out 3/4 of the way
through the cut. Now, I just cannot get the thing started.

I've:

- Replaced the spark plug
- Cleaned the air filter
- Checked and changed the oil
- Checked there's plenty of petrol
- Cleaned the blade

But nothing seems to have helped.

It will briefly start up, with the choke on full, but then quickly shuts
down. I don't even get that far without the choke - I wonder if that's a
clue as to what's wrong?

Any thoughts on what to look at next would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

mroshaw

I don't know that brand, but generic stuff:
Sounds like it's starving for fuel; either something in the carburetor is
plugged up, or the fuel line or filter (if any; sometimes there's a
strainer in the tank) are blocked.

Find out what engine you have, Mountfield are just a brand. I have a
"Mountfield" mower but the engine is Briggs & Stratten. Once you know
the engine maker wander over to their website and see if they have a
manual, the B&S site is pretty good.

Fuel starvation. Either blocked filter or a bit of crud in a jet.
Take the carb off an back flush it with clean fuel. As it was working
well and just died don't be tempted to adjust any of the jets.

+1 on the B&S website. +1 on the fuel starvation
I had similar problem and the cause was a degraded gasket (seal) in the
carbureter, where it was joined to the tank.
New gasket and new primer bulb and the mower is running sweetly again.

Hi all and thanks for the replies!

It has a Mountfield RV150 engine.

I don't quite know how, but I got it running again! I cleaned thoroughly
around the blade and sprayed a bit of WD40 here and there - fired up
just nicely!

As I say, no real understanding of how I got it working - probably just
the magical properties of WD40 and luck! :)

More likely the fact you tipped it over to look at the blade dislodged some
dirt in the fuel system or loosened something stuck like the float needle.

Unfortunately Mountfield no longer exists as a company anymore, it is just a brand name, it is part of GGP.

http://www.ggp-group.com/

Last time I looked, most of their hand mowers were built in Italy and it sounds like you have a Cinese built engine. Cheap but not great quality.

It would seem like you have a carburettor problem, which could be any number of things, including an air leak through the gasket, which is upsetting the fuel/air mix.

TBH, it will mean a trip to the dealers.

Trip to the dealers?
He had got it going
9 times out of 10 if you clean the carb that will sort engine running problems
