I don't recall ever seeing a Clematis growing through, or with, ivy - do
they mix?

Yes
My mother has an old pollarded ash tree in her garden, up which is
climbing a clematis montana 'Tetra Rose', an ordinary common wild Ivy
(Hedera Helix) and a Honeysuckle (Lonicera halliana I think).
They have been coexisting happily for about 8-10 years and look
wonderful.

Hello Andy,
I hope so, we've just planted two of them to do just that on our
fences. I have an ivy in a pot next to an arch and there is a small
Clematis in there as well which seems to be doing just fine.

Definitely. I have C.montana 'Freda', with candy pink and
white striped flowers on bronzy-green foliage, clambering up and over
a rustic arch that is entwined with English ivy. The ivy hides the
poles in winter, and the clematis add a bright note in Spring. To keep
the interest alive, I have a honeysuckle, L.periclymenum belgica,
growing up the the other side of the arch, and I also grow one or two
canary creepers to scramble through the ivy, although they never do
particularly well, because the arch is in near permanent shade.

Well, the dutch chap on *the* Gardeners Question time was recommending
growing a clematis through an ivy ... or was that what sparked your
question?

No; I haven't heard it, but I do have a very new, very bare fence up one
side of my garden, as of this lunchtime.

Hello
talking about clematis growing through things, I have had a wisteria for
eight years and it has never flowered : ( I was wondering if a
clematis would grow up through it ? if so what kind would be
recommended. Its on a south facing wall. Any advice would be gratefully
received.

Your wisteria probably will flower, don't despair! I asked the same
question re a clematis recently and got a resounding encouragement, so
I've planted C. Marie Boisselot which is white and although still tiny,
has rewarded me with several flowers already. I have also seen this
done through large Camellias and it's spectacular.

We had a variegated ivy and a Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus
tricuspidata, I think) growing together up an old wall. The VC hid the
ivy in summer, gave the usual show of brilliant red foliage in the
autumn, and when the leaves dropped, the variegated ivy came into its
own. It was very effective, and because the ivy was happy in the
'shade' of the VP in the summer, it flourished too.
