So, i have an iphone x with the new ios 12 installed on it last night. This morning i had an interview class with my lecturer about my thesis. To make it easier for me to takes on every word he says, i choose to record it on the voice memos. I already test it first and it records. After that i pressed the red button and begin recording session, it did shows the recording process with the sound graph or something like that (sorry i didn't know how to called it). After like 57 minutes i done my interview, when i pressed the done button it just bring me to the voice memos and it didn't show the recording i just made. But, when i try to search on the home screen (that one when u swipe to the right and type on the search box) it shows my last already made recording with the correct voice memos names but it didn't show up on the voice memos apps. How can i recover that lost voice memos when i can still search the correct name and it still shows up the memos ?

I try to describe as specific as possible, because i hope i can recover that voice memos because it is really a very very important one. I made this communities support account just for this just to let you know.

Are you on the latest ios 12 or on the previous ios 11 ? If so, i think the ios 12 is the culprit behind this. Because, i used to record a lot with the voice memo on ios 11, and everything always gets recorded normally. It ***** so much if this thing didn't have any resolution ?.

I already moved on, because i try almost everything possible. From restarting app, hard restart, trying to see from iTunes, etc. Nothings works. For me, the first thing i notice when the problem occurs is when the voice memos app crashing, or running in the background and suddenly the recording icon on the top left disappear. Just make sure, whenever possible do 5 - 10 times trials of recording for 5 - 10 seconds, and also don't run it on the background. Disable the auto-lock on the settings so the phone screen will still turned on. This may prevent further crashes. I'm doing the follow up interview for my thesis and by doing what I just mention, I always successfully record voice memos. This is just ridiculous that apple didn't solve any of this problems.

I'm really disappointed that I can't access the hour-long recording I made this afternoon. (I'm still hoping against hope that it's not *lost* lost.) Before coming to this thread it hadn't occurred to me how many people rely on the voice record tool in their work. My sympathies to anyone who has lost a recording of serious professional or personal consequence.

We had a small family crisis. We recently upgraded our phones to iOS 13 (we don't know if this is connected or not), and one of children was suddenly able to hear voice memo recordings on their phone made by us on our phone. iCloud had been used to back up and share recordings on my wife's devices, but as far as I can see, there's no option to share recordings automatically via family sharing.

However, now that I have deleted it from the screen, with the message prompted saying that any memo synced to the cloud would remain there, I see that the space is still taken up. I assume I have to hit "delete app" from the storage part of settings, but the warning message reads something like "doing this will delete all the data associated to this iPad. This is irreversible" (I'm translating cause my iPad is set to French). However, I am not sure if deleting the app of my iPad will definitely keep all my memos over on my iPhone, and, most importantly, on the iCloud server, because I do not want to lose everything, so I thought I would check before risking to make a big mistake.

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We see you have some questions about your Voice Memos, and we'd like to help. When you delete the application, the memos should still be saved where you backed them up, as you can restore from that backup at a later date. The following link can walk through how to delete Voice Memos: Edit or delete a recording in Voice Memos on iPhone - Apple Support

It looks like there is confusion here between the Voice memos app and the Voice Memos app data(the actual recordings). When you delete apps from one device, it will never be deleted from another device. With that being said, deleting the Voice Memos app from your iPad will not delete it from your other Apple devices.

That means, if you would like to remove your voice memo recordings from your iPad, and keep them on all other devices, you'll have to turn off iCloud for Voice Memo on your iPad. This way deleting them off your iPad won't delete them from your other devices. (iCloud keeps all devices in sync)

Alright, that's good to know but it's still not what I'm asking: will deleting the voice memo app from my iPad delete the memos from the cloud, or will I be able to keep the memos on the cloud and syncing with my phone?

Looks like people have been talking about this for at least 8 years. Not sure why Apple doesn't do something about this. The fact that they just leave voice memos in your music library for all to hear is so unlike the detail that Apple puts into other things. When you listen to music on shuffle it will just play your voice memos. I understand that there is some way to individually deselect them. I have no idea where to do this. There should at least be a global setting in voice memos to hide them from music both visually and functionally. Any insight in to any of my rant points would be appreciated. There is not a multiple selection for devices this pertains to iPad iPhone MacBook . Thanks

To use the column browser to quickly access and deselect the voice memos: open Music app, select Songs, click View > Column Browser > Show Column Browser, then select Voice Memo in the Genres category.

Good morning. In the last couple days I have encountered errors with the Apple voice memos app that are cutting off my recordings when they are made and keeping me from recording full conversations. I have used the app to make recordings without problem for several years now but suddenly there are issues this week. I'm not sure if the app was recently updated. If so there is clearly a bug in the update, but I can't delete the app and reinstall it because I would lose all my old recordings. My iOS and the app are both up to date.

I'm so bummed because it's not letting me record and it's been my go-to app for recording and songwriting all this time. Taylor Swift even uses voice memo for recording ideas. If you can't fix it for me, let's all fix this issue for her!

Found this issue while trying to Backup an iPhone SE 2nd gen. The Backup ended up being half a terabyte out of a 64gb model! Deleted all voice memos and then the app but 495gb still exists. I called apple about the Backup issue before I found this problem.

Hello Apple team, I have the same issue and I was able to listen to the voice memos and I sent them to another iphone via Airdrop and deleted the app afterwards yet the voice memos storage kept showing usage of 2.3TB and my phone capacity is 128GB. Now I am trying to update my phone to ios16 to see if the bug might be fixed. Is there any update to solve this issue??

I have updated and the issue did not resolve itself. No one from apple has responded to my inquiry about how to manage this issue. I have tried everything suggested, short of factory resetting my phone. I would appreciate some kind of feedback.

I just solved the issue, I first deleted the voice memo app and turn it off from iCloud and updated my phone to ios16 and transferred my data to another iphone with ios16. Make sure both phones are plugged in a charger and you have good internet connection. After data transfer on new phone the issue of voice memo has been resolved and to resolve the issue on the old phone you can reset it

I just wanna know why the Voice memos app uses internet connection, moreover cellular data. I upgraded to ios 12 yesterday and didn't notice that the settings of the app have changed to use cellular data, so the app consumed !!several GB!! during one-hour usage. But I really don't understand what is the data usage for (it's not even saved in my iCloud).

WHAT??!! ME TOO. I just got slapped with a notice from my cell service that I'm over my data and I've been charged accordingly!!! WHAT HAPPENED? Recently, I updated my iPhone (with new voice memos app) and trusted APPLE would never allow me to install and activate a feature (auto sync) without a WARNING that the sync feature was AUTOMATIC rather than manual which would allow me to choose WHEN to sync and that it might result in HUGE data transfers over my cell service!! BAM! This is not any way to treat a loyal customer since 1984. I trusted (PAST TENSE) APPLE to protect me. I no longer feel that way. ? Auto sync without a warning? Sounds like a good idea to me, but that's why I don't work at APPLE. Is anyone listening? I hope so, because your PR just went into the toilet!

I am literally fuming. Have been a voice memo user for ages and have never had the issue where it uses mobile data. I ran up a bill of more than $200 in the space of an hour this afternoon using mobile data (without my knowledge) when my plan's inclusive data had been depleted. It's simply unacceptable that an update of the app now includes the option to use mobile data without specifically asking you to consent to it. Where can I send the claim for a refund?
