I do apologise if this is off topic but there is so much knowledge
here I couldn't resist...

My greatgrandfather, Stephen Holman, was a landscape gardener in
southern England in the mid 1800s and travelled to commissions in
Tottenham (1839), Deptford (1843), Bradfield (1845) and Framfield,
Sussex (1849).

I just wonder whether he appears in histories of English
landscaping...? I would just love to find out more about him. Perhaps
the name just might ring a bell with some kind soul? I am just not
sure where to go to seek this information.

Apologies again if I am intruding....

Max,

You may also find a lot of help on soc.genealogy.britain. Post the same
message and see what response you get.

The message <v95b2tkeusqc5jb7n...@4ax.com>
from Max Spiller <wise...@hotmail.com> contains these words:

You aren't intruding at all. If you contact the Royal Horticultural
Society in London, they have a lot of garden history archives in their
library and may be able to arrange a search for you. Let us know what
you find :-)

Ah Iris, thank you, I had thought of that but thought I would try this
one first...Thank you for the suggestion though, it is appreciated.

And thank you too Sacha - I have hunted heartily but there seems to be
no mention of him on the Net, as yet anyway.
