A friend recently heard on Radio 4, (The Food Programme, Womens' Hour??)
about a lady growing saffron in Wales. She would like to follow this up
but did not manage to get any details. Hopefully there are not too many
saffron growers out there, and perhaps someone may have an idea about
the broadcaste or the lady.

v...@bbc.co.uk will try to track it down, they have done very well for me
in the past. Give them as much info as you can about the program and
date.

Roger
The saffron grower is called Caroline Riden and her address is Caer Estyn
Farm, Rhyddyn Hill, Caergwrle LL12 9EF
We bought some corms from her two years ago and can thoroughly recommend
growing your own saffron. The corms are sent out in June-July when they are
dormant and flower in October/November or once the weather turns cold. If
you want to harvest the saffron you do have to keep tabs on the flowers and
extract the red stigma as soon as the flower opens (the birds like them!).
You leave behind the purple flower to enjoy and put the stigma into the
airing cupboard to dry. It makes a great addition to risotto.

I drive right through Caergwle every day on my way to work - do you
know if the farm is open to visitors?
