I've just built a wildlife pond last year and I'm trying to find a reference
book to know what the hell is going on in it i.e. the yearly cycle of the
ponds animals and plants etc - nitty gritty stuff and NOT how to build them
(as its already built) or how to look after the fish!!! or one without
Charlie what's-her-face in!!!

Can anyone help me find a decent reference book for wildlife ponds?

You probably need to look for a natural history book rather than a pond
book - that said, I haven't found anything that's comprehensive and
still has a reasonable depth of information. I use the Reader's Digest
Field Guide to the Water Life of Britain, which is quite good on
habitats. Rivers lakes and Marshes, in the Natural History of Britain
series published by Hodder and Stoughton, is probably better for
identification

... the leech bit is, anyway (but then I have to say that or my computer
engineer goes on strike ;-) )

Though it does give you something to look at until everything else gets
established! And if you're lucky the heron will then eat them:-)
Really if you have fish, don't worry too much - in our small 6x8 pond we
still get frogs toads, smooth and great crested newts, dragonflies,
damselflies and chasers, waterboatmen and pondskaters - to name but a
few. Other than preventing the pond weed from taking over we do next to
nothing in the way of maintenance, and let nature take its course.

Whittet Books do a great one by Trevor Beebee, called Pond Life.
ISBN 0-905483-99-5 approx 8 ukp.
A very good read.
Also the RHS book Water Gardening by Philip Swindells ISBN 1-85732-974-0 again

He's probably a Turkish swimming cat - you did say Jasper Plant Trasher
was ginger and white, didn't you?

Damn! And there's me hoping he was a Lancastrian short-lived
moggy. :~)

The little git has discovered bulbs and, now that the
leaf-chasing-and-crashing-into-plants season is drawing to a close,
he's redirecting his energies into digging.

Stupid kitten! First he thought he was a fish, now he thinks
he's a mole. The vet says it's because he's missing one of his
danglers.

I thought that was a fairly accurate description of all cats who have
ever lived with you?

;-)

Trust you to pick a substandard one - and make life awkward for the vet
when it comes to his 'little operation'. ;-)
