Hi

Can anyone suggest a suitable 40th Wedding anniversary gift for my parents,
they have a good sized well established garden and love gardening. I would
like something with "Ruby" in it's name ideally, and am open to suggestions
on type of plant, they particularly like miniture roses but anything hardy
would be enjoyed by them. Thanks in anticipation,

Nicky

There is a Weigela called 'Bristol Ruby' which is very easy to grow and
has really nice ruby red trumpet shaped flowers and deciduous green
leaves. It is very common in the garden centres but is a good plant for
all that :-) Weigelas can get to be big shrubs but are happy to be
pruned.

I bought my parents a rose from David Austin Roses called Ruby
Wedding for their 40th. Bought direct as we live near buy, but I
think they do mail order.

A quick check on the RHS PlantFinder brings up the following list:

Astrantia major ‘Ruby Wedding’
Camellia x williamsii ‘Ruby Wedding’
Chrysanthemum ‘Ruby Enbee Wedding’ (29d) AGM
Dahlia ‘Ruby Wedding’ (MinD)
Dianthus ‘Ruby Wedding’ (p)
Fuchsia ‘Ruby Wedding’
Leptospermum scoparium ‘Ruby Wedding’
Pelargonium ‘Ruby Wedding’ (Z)
Rosa ‘Ruby Wedding’ (HT)

I would guess that you wouldn't want the Pelargonium, but some of the
others may be worth looking at. If you let us know which of them
you're interested it I'll check who supplies them.

Phew! thanx for that and the offer of help to find suppliers, have ordered
the Rose now from:
http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/improcrop/rosesonline/weddings.htm

Well worth checking out - Very personal service, I rang them to ensure I
could get it sent at the right time and the gentleman I spoke to was so
helpful! Nice to get customer service these days :o)

I'm always a little wary of plants with names like that, I may just be
being cynical but I always wonder if they're named so because they're
not all that good and it guarantees sales, but it's not a bad plant,
my parents have one that a friend of theirs gave them for their ruby
wedding.
