I'm tracing my ancestry and have come to my great grandfather, Frederick
Saggs (born 1855), who was reputedly the Head Gardener at Hatfield House,
residence of the current 6th Marquis of Salisbury. If so, he would have
been there at the time of the 3rd Marquis, a three times Prime Minister, who
began restoration of the gardens to their former Jacobean glory.
Would any gardening, or gardening history, expert happen to know whether
Frederick was, in fact, an employee at Hatfield House please?
Thanks

Places like that often keep decades of household and estate
accounts and records; and owners are often keen archivists. Why not
write to the 6th marquis and ask him?
