It depends on whether they sell by the tonne or cubic metre; if you
mean sand, it is about 750 and exactly 1,000 litres respectively.
Of course, "exactly" assumes that you are being sold exactly a
cubic metre, which is very unlikely. Cormaic may correct me on the
bulk density of sand, but I think that it is about right.

Most gravels etc. are about the same density as sand, but things like
shredded bark are much lighter. Soil varies wildly, but is usually
slightly lighter than sand - except when it isn't! Of course, a
cubic metre remains 1,000 litres irrespective of density.

A builder i have ordered from replied :
Hi John

For an area of 64m² @ 50cm deep you will need approximately 6½ tonnes
Pennine
costs £50.00 per tonne.

Many Thanks

Not a chance: ask him to recalculate. 50mm deep would be
closer.

Seems to be a bit of confusion in the units, 50mm looks more like. But for
that quantity I'd ask myself if I could use 10 tonnes and buy a lorry load -
much cheaper. We recently bought 15 tonnes of silver sand for just over 300
quid inc VAT & delivery and it was carried from a quarry about 50 miles away
from here. Concreting sand or builders sand would be a good deal less. If
you buy stuff in bulk it's worth cultivating a good haulier - they know and
have accounts with the local quarries and sources of bark etc but don't
expect them to have any specialised knowledge of specifications, grades etc
needed for gardens.

What costs 50 quid per tonne?

Second, 8x7m = 56m2, not 64m2. :~)

And the original poster didn't make clear what material is
being used to cover the stated area. Is it sub-base (DTp1)? Sand?
Gravel? Bark?
