Can anyone help me?
I came back to coarse fishing late last year after a ten year break and
bought my first pole. It's only an 8 metre pole but it's long enough for the
fishing I like.
The problem I've now got is that last year I was doing alright catching
small perch and bream e.t.c. on a local club water but this season I've
started to venture to day ticket waters and have started to catch smallish
carp (even though I'm not going for them)and I'm losing alot of
hook lengths. What no. elastic and what strength of main and hook line
should I be looking at to stop the crack offs.
The pole I have at present is a Leeda Silver Spur with no. 3 elastic, 2.1
main line & 1.1 LB hook lengths.
Although I should probably change the pole for a longer and stronger
version, I don't have the cash at the moment as I had to buy all new kit
(box, bags, nets e.t.c.), but I don't want to spoil the enjoyment of
playing small to medium sized fish.
Thanks,
Nigs :-)

in reply to your request i would sugest to just keep setting your gear a
little heavier all the time until you get it right, you do not say what
weight the carp go to but even the small onces can put up a good fight the
trouble is if you go to heavy you will not get bites so it is just trial and
error just keep going a little bit heavier all the time until you dont get
broke but still get bites
Regarding lastics it is the same a no 5or6 thruogh the top two should be
alright for carp in the four to five pounds range but if there is any big
boys about you will have to go up to 12or more through top three
just keep the grub going in and see what comes along
GOOD LUCK

The best way I found to tackle small carp upto about 5lbs, is to use a
number 8 elastic to a 012 or 014 straight through, to a number 16
pinch barbed hook, the elastic should be put through the top 3
sections and put in faily loose, so if you do start to catch smaller
fish you wont bump them, on the other hand if the larger carp do turn
up, you will still be able to land them with not to much bother.....

A few points .
1, Not all pole elastics are the same. A future number 8 elastic is
the same diameter as a drennen number 10 elastic. It is the diameter
of the elastic that is critical not the number although most people
refer to number.
2, For puddle carp fishing where the average weight is 2-6lb I would
recommend a number 10 ( Drennen scale ) elastic with .12-.14 line. If
there are snags neaby then use 12-14 elastic.
3, The heavier elastic will mean that you bump some smaller fish off,
there are ways around this using a duel elastic setup. I have used a
mixture of 6 and 10 elastics with a through bung setup, but I was not
that impressed with the system, but other people swear by it.
4, Run the elastic through more than one section if you anticipate
larger fish. As a rule for 1-4 elastic use 1 section 6-8 elastic use 2
section and for the heavier grades use 3 sections.
5, Make sure that the elastic pulls out smoothly, lube the elastic
each time you start and ensure that the bush is large enough to
accomodate the elastic easily. For heavy elastics a friend of mine has
omitted the last section of the pole altogether and bushed the end of
his section section. This works very well and I'm going to switch to
this system myself soon.

Hope this of some use to you, sorry for awkward spelling sent in
hurry.
