Hi there,

It was good to hear from you on this page, and while I am no longer a
member of Shefford and district A.C. I used to be a committe member
and bailiff for the club in about 1963. Do you still have the Airman
Pool? I believe that the club was intending to buy the water in the
mid 60's, did that go through? I used to fish the Airman quite
regularly, and while I never caught a great deal there, I did have
some nice tench. Well, they were nice tench in those days, a lot of
tench anglers would turn up their nose at them these days. I used to
enjoy fishing the stretch of the Ouzel that ran through Shefford too,
do you still have that? Best wishes, chevin

hi chevin,

yes ,shefford does still have the airman pit ,it now has quite a few
carp(they restocked afew years ago),and also quite a few catfish are
supposed to be in there , though i have not hooked one yet! i think
there are some tench still but ihave only fished it once this season.

this year they have a new water ,a stretch of the ouse just north of
bedford at bromham weir.this is an excellent stretch of water with lots
of carp,tench,chub,barbel,and bream.

they do have stretches of river through shefford but i have not fished
them myself.

are you a member any where now ?

Not in the UK I am afraid. I left there in 1977 and came out to
Australia.

I have fond memories of the time I spent with Shefford angling club
thiough, and it was when I was with them that I made what I think was
one of my major contributions to English Angling. I was their rep at
GOFCA one year, and the question of what to do with Grafham came up
(before the area was flooded) and I proposed it should be set up as a
trout fishery. The vote carried that, and that is what happened.

I didn't know that the Airman now had catfish in it. I was aware that
Maylin's Pool (now Whithy Pool) just down the road had them, but not
when I was fishing in that area!

The river through Shefford was fun to fish, but there was nothing of
note there. Perhaps there is now. Best wishes, chevin

Living in the Herts area I have fished with the Shefford Angling Club mainly
at Broom.
this was about two years ago.
I always felt that this was a water with so much potential with its
shrubbery around the bank
and its secluded swims. Unfortuently it never really fished well. Speaking
to other anglers I was told
it had been in decline for some time. Is it any better now.?

I have fished at Broom lake a few times and I could not agree with you
more,it has never fished as well as it looks for me.I know a 1 or 2
people who have had limited success there , carp to 12 lb ish and tench
to 4 1/2 lb ,which are nice fish, but never in any great quantity.
It was also re-stocked with all the fish from Stanford Pit.

The club has now got the fishing rights to another stretch of the Great
Ouse at Bromham ,just north of bedford, which is an excellent water, big
carp, tench, barbel, chub, bream, pike and perch ,you never know what you`ll
catch ,I`ve even caught pike on luncheon meat, slug and meatballs so you
can get anything on anything there. But it does get hammered on the
stretch below the weirpool .The ouse at pavenham is also good for barbel
and chub.It would be worth re-joining for Bromham alone.

Where do you fish now and for what?
