Timbo
June 16th to March 15th.
Hiya Nick, You're quite correct in what you say. But once you you start
travellin' South, the close season applies to canals as well as rivers (a
controversy that's still causing arguments). I think Timbo was asking for
the official fishing season dates which are what I posted. And regretfully
he asked on the last day of the "open" season. There have been a lot of
published opinions on this subject over the years but I tend to agree with
the majority on this one. The close season has become a mockery. It is
intended for the fish, the wildlife, and the bankside vegetatation to
recover from the savages of winter, but we all know that they are all only
just starting this process in June. Yet we're all out of patience and can't
wait to get to the water's edge. We go fishing and watch the mating
processes at the same time. We do need a close season but who can determine
the correct period? The faun and flora are the same as us, they've waited
for the good weather to arrive. I recall the days spent through winter
repairing tackle and making floats etc. and June 16th was well worth waiting
for, but it seems those days have gone up here in the North. (all down to
moneymaking I suppose) Having said all that, the more time we spend with
the fish and the wildfowl is the more time we have to care for them, feed
them and generally look after their health. We up here in the North are
fortunate that we can fish all year round as you have already mentioned, but
even up here the rivers are closed during March 15th to June 16th unless
you're using spinner or worm which is classed as Trout fishing ( probably
get shot down on that one). Anyways I'll be putting the inner & outer
thermals on and giving it a go at the local Dam tomorrow. Tis the time for
big roach hopefully.
Maggots in yer catapult & tight lines to all.
Tinny.
