Anyone had experience of trying to buy & fit a dressage saddle to a wide,
but very flat backed 4yearold warmblood/trakehener? It has been suggested
that an Albion is rather heavy but the farrington, although rather unknown,
would be a pretty good fit. Any 1st hand knowledge? Putting Flair into the
saddle could be an option.

I would get saddler to come out and fit your horse, you will save money in
the end.

I have already done that - he is the one that recommended this type of
saddle but didn't have anything second hand available. I am trying to get
some other opinions on this type of horse from people who may have some
experience of this.

I have a similar shaped horse and tried on millions of saddles and
consulted thousands of saddlers (ok maybe not that many but that's
what it felt like!). I nearly got a Farrington but ended up with a
Frank Baines, and haven't look back. It's the most comfy saddle I've
ever sat on, and my horse goes well in it. I think the Farrington
would've been just as good though, and are a bit cheaper.

I've a Farrington on my young Shire X who has a very wide flat back (but
med/wide wither) I also seemed to try 1000's of saddles!
The Farrington does the job but isn't the highest of qualities (fibreglass
tree), but horse is comfy and when he isn't changing shape so much I'll get
something better.

Good luck

Sara

Thanks Jane and Sara for your comments - I am hoping to go to visit a much
larger saddlery early next week who have lots in stock, and are sure that
they will have something to fit, so fingers crossed!!

I haven't actually seen a Farrington saddle yet, I was interested to read
the comments about the quality and fibre-glass tree. I will bear that in
mind when I am looking.

Glad to be of help, and also be aware that you can get Farringtons
with a wooden tree too for very straight backed horses, (as this was
what was recommended for mine). These are a bit more expensive than
the fibreglass ones and I think are only made to measure so you may
not see one in the shop.
