Petra is the one to ask ;)
I for a while considered holding off a little and asking my friend for help in
buying a horse abroad, abroad being Hungary in this case... Kinda decided
against it in the end (glad I did!) since it seemed a lot of hassle, and I
felt more comfortable buying nearby... Sol was the first horse I went to see
and I immediately liked his character. I brought a friend with a digital
camera... I didnt go out to buy a horse, and didn't. Saw him once, friend kept
telling me how small he was... had some time to think, talked to breeder, then
went over once again on my own to have him vetted... talked to owner/breeder
again (by phone, he wasn't kept anywhere near where they lived) and then
finally came together on a price (could hardly called it bargaining, they
dropped 250 euros of the price without any argument, when I was just trying it
on).
All in all, I still think I bought my boy at a bargain price, even with the
castration costs added up... Sure, it may have more sense for me to buy an
older horse, but it would have been more expensive, more tested, perhaps have
an unknwon history/bad experience and so forth... I decided against that, and
I have liked having the boy around, even if he's still just a baby...
Not saying you should buy a youngster, just telling my personal experience...
But yeah, prices for decent horses in Holland definitely seem to be quite a
bit lower than in the UK...
Good luck... excited yet? :)

Petra may be able to give some more of an idea of the cost from Germany?

Middle of Germany to Home Counties about 500 for example, Holland (bottom end)
a little less.

Trying not to be :O) But the prospect of soon earning money and leaving
student-dom is a good one, and the chance to become a horse owner. I'm very
much at the research stage at the moment, but hopefully in about 12 months
time I will be the proud owner of a youngish (5-7yrs) warmblood.

I've used Woffords from Verden, Germany to Cheshire several times and can
recommend them. It works out about £450 - £500 plus vat on a one horse
basis.
