I have acquired 2 Lister engines, I am completely new to all this and
wondered if anyone could help me to date them and where I can find any
information on these engines.

They are both runners and seem to be in good condition but I have no idea
even what oil to put in them, so you see I need help

Thanks

Lister D's and most other Lister engines can be dated by the old/new method
as published in Stationary Engine magazine last year.

The list is also contained in the Lister Service Book, and a copy of that
and the Petters dating information is on my web pages as below.

A good grade of car engine oil is OK, but a straight SAE30 is better if you
can get it. The engines do not reach high enough temperatures for really
thin 15W multigrades, and if the engine is dirty inside, a good diesel
detergent oil will clear out a lot of crud after a few hours running.

Lister D's were made over a long time period, with over 250,000 made in
total. Production ended about 1964, so you could have a quite recent
engine. Early shaft drive mag models are the most collectible, but all
models are fun to play with, and most collectors (including me) have a
couple.

Spares are readily available, and Stationary Engine mag has a full page ad
inside the front cover for David Edgington who publishes reprints of the
manuals and other interesting books.
