I have just been to our local Tractor / Steam / Stationary Engine
rally at Kingsley, between Alton and Bordon in Hampshire. It was a
good turnout for a local event with 20+ engines on display.
One engine caught my eye, it was a radiator cooled Lister DKR running
on parafin.
I own a Lister D (Spec 18 DHRS 1936 petrol) that is reverse rotation
(the R in the spec ) and after looking at this Parafin engine for
sometime I became puzzled because it was running clockwise.
Now the reason I was puzzled was firstly because it had an 'R' in the
spec, and the carb was on the magneto side and the exhaust was on the
flywheel side of the engine. This configuration was the same as my
Lister D reverse rotation.
So how come the engine was running clockwise?
I questioned the owner who informed me that the R in the spec was
because it was a radiator cooled example. But it didn't solve the
carb/exhaust configuration.
Eventually I discovered by further questioning that the parafin
vapouriser block has diagonally connected ports internally, thus the
external location of the carb and the exhaust are swapped compared to
a petrol engine. This configuration ensures that the parafin/air mix
is heated sufficiently by the exhause to vapourise and combust.
I was partly correct about the 'R' meaning Reverse Rotation, It
appears that early Lister D's used a 'R' in the spec to mean Reverse
Rotation, but with later D's it meant Radiator Cooled.

To my knowledge, the R has always denoted Rad Cooling for all Listers,
but agree that Listers thermselves sometimes cocked up on the meaning !

Hi All,
In my first posting I mentioned the use of the R to mean reverse
rotation. The following info came from David Edgingtons Book on the
Lister D.
My Lister D is a Spec 18 DHRS made in 1936,
D = Engine type
H = Hopper cooled
R = Reverse rotation
S = Standard Power ( 1 1/2 HP at 750RPM )
According to the book, 'R' was used on earlier engines to denote the
reverse rotation. Although it doesn's say how early, it must be later
than 1936.
Does anyone have a later 'D' RevRot that has a R in the spec instead
of Z ?
My main point from the origional posting was that the ports on the
parafin vapouriser are diagonally connected, something that can't be
seen externally. The position of the carb and exhaust reinforcing my
missunderstanding of that particular engines spec DKR.
There is a later posting about converting a D to run on parafin, in
one of the follow on messages Roland also talks about the swapping of
positions of the carb, silencer and all the ancillary parts.
Had I seen this earlier then ......

As you say, we have been here before !
My information is from the Lister Service Handbook, which you probably
have a copy of yourself, and it does quote R for rad cooling.
Later numbering does use the A for anticlockwise, but I cannot find a
break point for the change, other than the style of engine number plate
which made the difference perhaps a little easier to discern.
My service book is dated May 1977, and is quoting the R for Rad. My ST
handbook is dated 1987 and uses the very latest system.
I had assumed that there wouldn't be too many D's produced in the 1970's
so omitted the later numbering system :-))
