Have an RS1 magneto with a weak spark, have eliminated points, condenser,
coil windings - the spark is weak coming out of the coil so lead/plug etc
are also innocent.

It's not peviously been turned over for the best part of 15 years, somebody
suggested to me the permanent magnets may have lost magnetism over the years.

The electric drill trick supposed to re-energise those magnets somehow, has
not worked. Suggestions for somebody that can re-magnetise the armature for
a small fee would be gratefully received - or can I do this myself somehow ?.

Perhaps Independant Supplies ?

Cheers

Independent Ignition Supplies are not cheap and seem to have a variable
reputation. I personally have only used them for bits and pieces, like
points. One I can recommend is Magneto Repairs www.magnetorepairs.com.
They did an excellent job on my Bosch flick mag. However, ensure that
you get a quote before they start any work to prevent any nasty
surprises. It may be that you can pick up another RS1 for less than
the cost of putting the present one right.

Thanks John

Had some dealings with Independent Ignition Supplies ages ago for a part for
my Fowler 1PA mag, only thing I remember is they were painfully slow.

Have been to the magneto repairs site suggested and will ring them up in the
week to talk money. You are right, RS1's are common enough, so if I can bag
one cheap enough that would be quick and easy. Once I've got two, one
working, the temptation is to swap bits around looking for an exact
'diagnosis'; practical tinkering a great source of knowledge and all that.
The idea of ending up with two, neither working, may well prevent this.

With the Sodbury Sortout looming on the 14th October, I'd have thought a
"loaf of bread" magneto could be cheaply obtained. They are not especially
sought after & I'd have thought forty quid would get you a good one. Make
sure you know the rotation before hunting!

to turn away the Norman invader but inevitably die with his king.

As the Sodbury Sort out is on the 7th Oct you may be able to attend Kim.

Google will find you a leaflet by Lucas called "Remagnetisation
of magnetos". It covers all mags available in the mid 50's,
including the SR1 (the RS1 is very similar).

If you can't find it, I'm pretty sure BritBikes have it for free in
their tech info section (which is excellent on Lucas & Amal
stuff).

If you fail, mail me. I have a copy.

Also, I think IF have a manual for the RS1. Haven't read it,
so don't know whether it covers remagnetising.

Found it ! (despite constantly being asked if I meant - remagneti'z'ing)

Interesting Sunday afternoon reading. Fits exactly with my problems,
explains all.

Originally I thought I might knock up something at home, am handy with a
soldering iron and have access to high current output DC power supplies. But
as I worked my way through the workshop instructions it became obvious with
9 square inches of core area in the magnetic circuit to make and winding
enough coppper wire to get the 70,000 amp/turns this was not going to be an
afternoon tinkering - nor cheap possibly.

Have an MRI scanner at work with a 1t field, now if I could just smuggle it
in :-)

Back to saying sod it and buying another one.

Cheers

Look up Martin Percy in Stationary Engine Mag under the Help Line ( Magneto
Repairs), he is in Wellingborough, he has a magnetizer and will go it for
you.

Hi Ken, You don't need that many turns. The magnetiser I built years ago
only has about 20 turns on the magnetic core.
The secret is to use the heaviest starter cable you can lay your hands on & take
this to a very large 150V Electrostatic capacitor via a very large Thyristor.
I just slowly charge the capacitor (using a cheap voltmeter to control voltage)
When charged I press the button to trigger the thyristor & a vast pulse does the job.
Usually all my nearby iron bits jump on the bench when I do it.

Gentlemen,

I visited Martin Percy one time to get a Villiers mag re-magnetized, he
switched his machine on and damn near emptied a shelf as it all leapt onto
the magnetizer.

Thanks for the warning, have hundreds of little plastic drawers full of old
resistors/capacitors/wot nots all with wire leads. Would make a nice birds
nest if that lot took flight.

Found a thyristor with nuts and bolts for connectors instead of wires - just
need to root out a hefty capacitor to make the pulse jobby suggested by Dave.

Thanks Martin

Have an SE from August lurking about somewhere and phoned up Kelsey for the
current issue last Friday, so should find him. If I can go along in person
it should be interesting by the sound of it, both to see the job done and
try to examine the bit of 'kit' he uses.

Not sure wereabouts you are but I have used the following guy for
remagnatizing, with good results, and not expensive..

He is an engine owner himself.
