Hi there,

I'm looking to replace my old bike. At present all the cycling I do is on the road, however I fancy doing some off-road
cycling as well, and my local cycle shop has recommended a hybrid as a compromise. The bikes they have recommended are
Raleigh Pioneer Trail 4000, for approx. £350, or a Trail 2000 for £250.

Does anyone have any experience on the merits of either of these bikes, or alternatively are there other makes / models
I should look at under £400?

Many Thanks

I've just bought, from Dales in Glasgow, a Specialised Rockhopper FS - was
£499 - reduced to £399. AFAIK this is on offer from Specialised and should
be available from you LBS. So far I have nothing but praise for the
Rockhopper. :-)

They also had a Giant 850 ATX for £335 - anybody care to venture an opinion
on this bike as I don't know it at all.

Cheers
Bill

Last Year I bought the same bike that you have been quoted but under last
years name The Pioneer 21 STX. The bike is fine for road riding a little
heavy but for off road and rough trails I would have second thoughts. If
the trails are dry and rock hard no problem but if thay are very wet and
sticky forget it by a full blown mountain bike. I mainly use mine as a
tourer/ commuter bike and have done nearly 2000 miles on the original group
set and tyres. All the best with what you buy and happy cycling.

Regards
Darren.

Take my advice don't buy it. If you want a reason here's one - its a
Raleigh. Get something decent like a Specialized A1 Crossroads at £450.

I've been thinking of getting a Dawes Discovery I think its the "500"
that's listed at 399 pounds. Seems like quite good spec, though I agree
Dawes have an image problem (not as much as Raleigh though).

Does anyone have one of these or offer an opinion on them?

Whats wrong with Raleigh's then? Admitidly the cheap 200 quid jobs are not
great for anything (I have snapped two of the frames) but you don't expect
them to be really. The M-TRAX's are wonderful IMHO I have got two a MTRAX
200 and a MTRAX 1000 (see below), they are well made and use good
componetry. They also stand up to anything, I have jumped my MTRAX 1000 daily
for the last year and it none the worst for wear and when I say jump I mean
really jump.

Another thing is that while Raleighs aren't always the cheapest initaly they
do have a fantastic gurantee. I broke my old 1995 Stratos (£160 school run
job) in mid 1996 by crashing off a 20ft cliff (I also broke myself quite
a lot) but to its credit I didn't notice till early 1996 because all that
was wrong with the frame was a possible crack in one of the welds (well
apart from bending the handle bars into an attractive L shape). However when
I showed the shop they said since the frame had a 15 year gurentee they
would send it back just to be on the safe side. A week later I got sent back
a MTRAX 1000 frame because they didn't have any spare stratos frames. That
made my whole week and its stood up to everything thrown at it ever since.

So are you just slagging them off cause you are bored or do you have a good
reason?
