Ah but you forget Sod's third law of buggeration, which I'm sure applies
here:

: The toast always falls butter side down - except in an experiment to
demonstrate Sod's law.

Decision time - I recently got paid an unexpected chunk of previously
unclaimed holiday pay. Some of my winter kit (specifically, 1 jacket
(13 years old and finally about to give up the ghost!!), arm warmers,
gloves and 1 pair of training tights - the latter in fact were so bad
they were consigned to the bin a while ago) is looking a bit dog-eared,
so it would be nice to have new stuff in time to take the new 'cross
bike out over the festive season. An extra pair of shorts wouldn't go
amiss either.
But....do I buy stufft now (both Mike Dyason and Settle Cycles have
winter gear that would do very nicely indeed), or do I wait until the
winter sales are in full swing? Sod's Law is a double-edged sword here;
it's a fair bet that either (a) I buy things now and they'll appear
dirt-cheap in the sales or (b) I'll wait until the sales and nothing on
offer is in my size! Help!

Take a firm decision to go right out and buy them now, then quietly and

secretly don't go out and buy them. That way you'll fool Sod and his
law and the items will appear in the sales at cheap prices!

Um, BTW, this method is experimental and cannot yet carry a guarantee.

Does it work the other way round, i.e. buy the goods on the sly in
December, prior to firmly stating that I have no interest in the
January sales? ;-)

Buy it now. It's rare to find winter kit in the winter sales for
obvious reasons.

(i) This is more or less free money - you didn't expect to get it at all
- so if you spend it less than 100% efficiently it's not such a great
matter

(ii) If things are not available in the sales at your size you can still
buy them full price then.

In other words, do whichever you prefer; it disnae maitter.

Good point. And there's a lot more of it than I expected - I may well
keep a bit back to invest in a commuting/training bike to replace the
Trek MTB I currently ride to work.

I'll probably throw caution to the wind and order the stuff this month
regardless - some of it's being offered at prices that compare well
with some sale offers anyway.
