I remember the name Claude Butler as being one of
the best bikes years ago. Does this still hold true?
I've noticed that they do a range of cheapies
now; have they lowered their standards or are they
just trying to compete at a lower level to survive?

The company (and its reputation) was bought out years ago.
A google should show you the history.

Holdsworth bought the Claud Butler rights in the 50s and stuck the name
on some quite nice bikes (but probably not as good as 'real' CBs),
Falcon (actually Elswick) bought the rights in the 80s and stuck the
name on some fairly crap bikes. They're now part of a group that
includes Townsend and British Eagle. :-(
