Last summer we did Birmingham to London along the Grand Union Cannal and
were looking for something a little more exciting for this year. Do you
think the Lakeland Loop is too much of jump up?
Is there an alternative route round the lakes, for softies :). Thought
I'd heard of the 'flat route round the lakes' or somehting.
Thanks
Jeremy

That's probably the Cumbria Cycleway. Goes around the coast and up the
Eden valley, a circuit of the Lakes without going into the middle
bit. If you see what I mean. There's a leaflet, I can dig out the
address if you like, and I think Cicerone Press have done a book on
it.

The lakeland loop is written up as one of the Wheelright (sp?) series of
MTB guide book and is available in most shops. It includes a narrative on
the authors attempt as well as clear instructions and and the appropriate
parts of the OS 1:50,000 landranger maps.
The route is designed to take 6 days and goes as follows
day 1: Windermere - Patterdale (via High Street)
day 2: Patterdale - Keswick
day 3: Keswick - Buttermere ( via Back 'O Skiddaw)
day 4: Buttermere - Eskdale ( via Floutern Tarn, Black sail pass This is
probably the hardest day)
day 5: Eskdale - Coniston
day 6: Coniston - Windermere.
Its well worth doing and I'd reccommend buying the book as it is well
written and £10 well spent so get out there and do The Loop you won't
regret it

I'm setting off over Easter along the Wessex Way one (more of a pub
crawl than a serious ride...) as a warm up until the serious stuff of a
coast to coast attempt later in the year when the weather's a bit
more predictable.
Any comments on hardness, things to avoid, things worth going off the
route for, accomodation to avoid (it's not too late for us to change!)
and anything else at all are very gratefully recieved indeed
Stuart
Also we've got a rest day planned for Basingstoke.... The Tourist Info
Centre there have been really good with providing some cycling info for
the surrounding area, but what else is there to do in the unlikely
event that maybe we wouldn't want to go cycling too far on our day off?
I'm off this easter to do the day rides that are included in the book. There
are five of them, I'll see how many I get round (depending on the weather).
I'll post a report here if anyone's interested!
Oh, I enjoyed Bike '96. Fantastic. The only negative comment from my
girlfriend was the lack of womens clothing and bits!
Cheers,
Paul
I presume you're talking about Rob Warner walking around with two bodypainted
girls in the style of his sponsors T-shirts. Yep, definitely a lack of womens
clothing but I'm not sure about the lack of bits. ;-)
