It is a day that united Hull in grief.

Best friends Steven Duffield, 10, and Mason Deakin, 11, were hit by a vehicle as they were riding their bikes along a busy stretch of Anlaby Road on Monday, October 19 2020. The collision happened at around 6.10pm close to the East Yorkshire Buses garage in Anlaby Road and resulted in both boys being rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary, where Steven tragically died.

Brave Mason battled in intensive care for a fortnight, however, sadly he lost his fight for life and passed away with his family by his bedside. He had been transferred to Leeds General Infirmary, where he remained in a coma and on life support.

The man who hit them was Jack Hart. Hart finally admitted killing the two young friends by dangerous driving at Hull Crown Court on Monday.
Speeding driver finally admits his guilt

Hart, 32, of Anlaby Road, west Hull, had previously denied causing the death of Steven on October 19, 2020 and causing the death of Mason on November 2, 2020 by dangerous driving on Anlaby Road. He appeared before Hull Crown Court for a plea hearing ahead of the trial, which had been due to start on Tuesday. His not guilty pleas to the charges were entered during an earlier appearance at the court in June.

Hart was represented for the latest hearing by Charlotte Baines, who said that the seriousness of the case was the fact that he contravened a bus lane and had been speeding before the fatal collision.

He at first did not accept that he had anything to do with a missing dashcam, although, after the case was stood down for Hart to give further details on this, Miss Baines later said that he did not now want to put in a basis of plea over his version of that matter.

She said that Hart had indicated that he would be changing his pleas to guilty a few days or weeks ago. She asked for Hart to be allowed bail until the day of sentence so that he could sort out his affairs. She added that he had always attended previous hearings.

But Judge John Thackray KC remanded Hart into custody and warned him he faced a 'very significant sentence'.
Hull united in grief

The outpouring of love began following Steven's untimely death in October 2020. Less than 24 hours after the incident, emotional tributes to the "little angel" started to appear on the railings of the Anlaby Road flyover, just yards from the crash site.

Scores of people also came together on the day after his death to release balloons in a moving tribute to Steven in West Park. And on Halloween, several pumpkins were also placed at the scene of the accident, where flowers, balloons and banners have adorned the railings of the flyover since the crash.

One tribute read: "RIP Steven my little man. "You are gonna be missed and you are never gonna be forgotten. Can't believe you have gone at such a young age. You will always be remembered as my little angel and my little man. Sending love to you and your family."
Dad's tribute to 'fun-loving Mason'

After Mason's death, his father paid an emotional tribute to his "fun-loving" son. In a heartbreaking tribute, Jordan Deakin, 30, revealed that his 11-year-old son loved nothing more than riding his bike and that he found comfort in visiting the spot where hundreds of tributes were laid.

Describing his eldest son, who he shared with his former partner Kirsty, Jordan said: "Mason was just a fun-loving little boy. He was loved by lots of people. He was our cheeky little man.

"He was always wanting to be out and about. He had an iPad and all the games consoles but he always wanted to be out on his bike. They were best friends. His auntie lives around here and they were always playing out on the skate park on West Park. That is where Mason always was.

"He went to Chiltern Primary where he was liked by lots of people." He added: "He would never have a day off and always loved being in school. He used to get 100 per cent attendance and would always want to be there."

Jack Hart was refused bail and remanded in custody after he left it until the day before a trial was due to start before he, at last, pleaded guilty. Judge John Thackray KC said: "He has had two years to get his affairs in order. He has played the system and left it to the last possible minute. His plea has come over two years later than it should have done."

Hart curled his lip and stared ahead when he was told that he would be remanded in custody. Judge Thackray said that Hart faced a "very significant sentence measured in years".
