Does anyone experience bruising under the nails of thier big toes from
cycling. Each season I tend to loose most of my nails from it. Does
anyone know if this is a common cycling injury? Cause? Remedy?

I used to get that a lot when I played squash - in my case it was caused by
having toenails that were a little long; they used to hit the end of my
shoes when I stopped suddenly, and eventually would bruise (or in extreme
cases, break) at the base of the nail, with the entire nail coming off a few
weeks later.

Possibly your cycling shows are too big, allowing too much movement, or too
small, putting constant pressure on the nail?

HTH,

Pete.

When I played 5 a side both my big toes were permanently black. Since I gave
it up the black bits have shifted further up as the new nail has grown.
Never any problem cycling though.

Yep. I got exactly this type of big toe bruise on a 1000 km ride up the
Rhine, last year--took about 10 months to grow out of it. This year I'm
going to try mole skin each morning on top of the big toe.

It sounds to me as if your toes are getting crushed against the front of
your shoes, in which case either

(i) your shoes are too small or
(ii) your shoes are not nearly tight enough.

Remedy: buy shoes that fit, and do them up properly.

You could try Shimano SD60 sandals.

Are you using toe clips and straps?

I can't imagine how using clipless shoes/pedals could cause this problem
unless the shoes are a really bad fit.

It's certainly not a problem I've heard others complain of.

They are clipless shoes. The clips are shimano. The shoes seem to fit like
a glove. However, I am very flat footed. Being flat footed I am used to
getting a thick calous on each side of my big toe. But this bruising on
top of each big toes is a cycling thing. I cycle about 175 km weekly.

Is it possible that you are "clawing" your toes as you pedal - ie scrunching
up your foot as you push down on the pedals. Are you aware of pain in your
feet or toes as you ride, or is it only afterwards that your toes bruise up?
I did wonder if you were doing big miles, but 175km a week isn't that
excessive.

Can't really offer any advice other than to try new shoe and pedal combo -
the Shimano sandals are fine for Summer but not too practical in January! I
use Look pedals and cleats myself with a Nike road shoe (a very
comfortable) - when I did use Shimano, I found the very small contact area
of the pedal did sometimes give sore feet. Perhaps if you are using these
with a shoe with a flexible sole it could be causing the problem? Maybe try
a very stiff soled road shoe to see if it makes any difference??

Cheers, Bronzie

I have a friend who has had similar trouble. He might be willing to
advise by email but needs a clear email address to contact you. Could
you email your email address to me, please?

They are fine any time of year. I wear them every day, all year round.
Just add an extra layer or two of thick socks in cold weather - the sandals
have velcro fastenings so will expand to fit the layers.
