I've got four Karrimor Karousel Iberian pannier bags. SEVEN months
ago I tried to buy four of the water proof liners for my pannier bags.
These 'waterproof liners' are not the green bags that come with
Karrimors' bags, but a white thick rubber-type bag with a role-up and
clip seal. They're ideal for long tours and keep everything 100% dry.
I know this because I keep my sleeping bag in a Ortleib bag which is
similar to the 'water proof liners' that Karrimor "make" but shaped
like a sleeping bag!!! When I bought my Karrimor pannier bags and saw
that they sold these 'waterproof liners' I immediately knew I wanted
them.

7 months, 12 telephone conversations and two letters and Karrimor keep
saying they're 'in stock' but not available, whatever that means.

I know that I'm second on the list to receive these 'waterproof
liners' so I know that there is at least one other person in the world
who is also waiting for them.

If there's anyone out there who can help me or who as experianced what
I have I'd love to hear from you. Similarly, if there's anyone who
has got any of these bags I'll gladly trade my Grandmother for them.

To date I've bought hundreds of pounds worth of gear from karrimor and
this is the only problem I have had. I am surprised at Karrimor's
handling of the 'situation' and hope they can sort themselves out
before I really need these bags.

Cheers,
Glen.
PS: If anyone knows of an alternative to the Karrimor brand of these
'waterproof liners' please tell me about them!

I bought a pair of these canoe bag closure pannier liners about a year ago.
They're sort of whitish coloured, and shaped for the Iberian panniers. I got
them with no trouble from the Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative. I don't have the
phone number right now. Have you tried shops, rather than the
manufacturers? They work very well. I use Karrimor Aquashield (the first
version, with the flip over lidd over the canoe bag closure) universals on
the front pannier rack, these are excellent too.

Sell the Karrimor and buy Ortlieb.
After years of messing with plastic bags I just bought Ortlieb panniers
and handlebar bag.
Cyclists spend far too much on bike and bike-bits and far too little
on bags, clothes etc.
You only have on lifetime of touring you know.

So do the Ortlieb panniers have these liners? I should have guessed
really already having an Ortlieb sleeping bag-type waterproof bag -
It's probably one of most important pieces of kit (apart from the
obvious, like sleeping bag :)

Cheers,

Glen.

Why would they need liners? The Ortlieb panniers are fully waterproof
themselves. If you ford an river with Ortlieb panniers, you'll only
have to worry about your bike, not that your luggage may get wet (or
so people say who actually own the panniers).

Ortlieb also give a reasonably good warranty for their stuff, cost
barely more than the Karrimor Aquashield and are said to be much more
convenient.

Most people on de.rec.fahrrad are Ortlieb fans. The CT&C magazine had
a test of Ortlieb panniers about a year ago (I think Feb/March 95).

I think the newer Karrimor Aquashield panniers rival the Ortlieb. I use them
for carrying sleeping bags on tour. As far as I can tell, these are as
waterproof as they could be. The Pannier liners are a relatively cheap way of
giving this degree of waterproofing to a pair of Iberians. These things are
not the same as the grotty green bags that come with the panniers.

No. The Ortlieb bags have no liners. They are made of welded waterproof
fabric and have no stitched seams through which water can penetrate.
Expensive but brilliant design.

In theory don't need a liner as the bag is waterproof, Note not
water-resistant but actually waterproof, thats the theory anyhow.

"In theory _I_ don't need..."

:-)

If I didn't have a liner for my sleeping bag I may as well sleep in a
swimming pool (if it rained, of course).

I've got a Snug Pak Antartic which has 0% waterproofing. Well, it
might have a bit, but not rainproofing. I know people who've sprayed
their sleeping bags which waterproofs it, however this doesn't last
long and can effect the insulation of the bag.

MO, what sort of bag do you have - I've never seen or heard of a
completely "waterproof" bag, without spraying.

Cheers,

Glen.

In my experience the Ortlieb bags are waterproof in *practice*. Took
them on a six month test, including a couple of tropical storms in
Malaysia, where I was soaked to the skin in a couple of minutes, but
the stuff in my panniers stayed completely dry.

And on a long tour when going in and out of guest houses, airplanes
and so on the integral shoulder carrying handles are wonderful.

I'm happy with my Karrimor's at the moment, but I will take a look at
Orteib when my Karrmor's die (which should be a few years yet :-)

When I found an Ortleib waterproof bag thing for my sleeping bag I was
impressed with the idea and thoght I was the first person in the world
to have discovered them :-) I was surprised to see so many people
quoting their name. I've only ever seen one shop (in Nottingham) that
sells their stuff, and this shop ONLY sold the tub-like bags
(presumably for sleeping bags, although could be for anything I
suppose) of Ortleibs.

Steph, thanks for the 'review' - I live in Southport, which is only an
hour or so away from Manchester. Are there any good shops you could
suggest for camping/walking/cycling? At the top of my list at the
moment are shoes/trainers/boots for cycling(a lot)/walking(a bit).
Someone has suggested to me that I check out Nike Air Icarus - does
anyone know if they sell these in the UK?

Cheers,

Glen.
