How do I fit a junior hacksaw blade?

I've completely forgotten how you're supposed to fit a new blade to a
junior hacksaw. It seems one of those impossible tasks.

I can do advanced things with dual pivot brakes but I'm a right dummy at
most DIY, really :-( Please help!

Not OT, BTW. I need to chop up my bikes... Well, bits of them, sometimes,
etc. :-)

cheers

Note. I've got the old one out, just need to fit the new one.

The way I do it is clip the blade into the far end and bend the far end
towards the handle end by pulling on the blade and gripping the handle to
close it up, until it becomes possible to slot the handle end of the blade
in. Just requires a bit of pull and push!

Dead easy. Making sure the teeth of the new blade are angled in the
right direction, put the front of the blade into the slot of the
hacksaw with the little end stop of the blade on the outside of the
frame, then 'compress' the hacksaw by pushing it against the ground or
wall, so that the rear end of the blade will then just slot into
place, then release the pressure and the frame springs back into shape
grabbing the blade by the other end stop.

Well kind of!

Most bog standard junior hacksaw frames work the same way, you
basically have to force 'em Pete. Locate the new blade into one end
(small pins should fit into indents) and then ease the other end of
the frame inwards until you can fit the blade completely. They're
generally a bit tight so it'll be a squeeze but that's necessary, it's
the tension in the frame which holds the blade firm and provides the
required rigidity.

I'd suggest though, if you don't already have one that is, you buy a
full size hacksaw. Juniors are fine for when the job is very small or
access is difficult, but a good hacksaw frame will last the rest of
your life and will be useful again and again. And again.

You'll be able to find a Facom or Britool one for 10 - 15 quid, no
tool kit should be without one.

Done it!! Thanks Richard and Garry.

It just seemed like there'd have to be a ridiculous amount of
compression - but it was indeed easy in the end. I think I was trying it
the most awkard way around before.

Yep, I was being too chicken - and thought maybe the blade or saw was
non-standard.

Got one already - they are good to have.

I do a lot of small stuff (shortening small bolts, etc, etc).

Forget the antiquated hacksaw for cutting up bits of bikes - get a 9"
angle grinder from Screwfix (ignore the Nancy-boy 6" things). Go to
weight training classes at the local gym, then fire up your grinder
and Hey Presto! one bike in 500 pieces.

Mechanic taught me this trick.

Re: shortening bolts. (will not work with high tensile steel bolts).

Fit the bolt (mild steel), screw on the nut, personally I always put two
nuts on - especially say on a rear rack. Grip the excess part of the bolt
VERY tightly with mole grips dead against the nuts (insert joke here).
Waggle - excess drops off! Viola.

It won't work on anything above about 2 BA either - it shouldn't be tried
cos it will leave a ragged end - and it will be a b---h to remove.

I've now found it's much easier on some saws than others. I've chucked
out the saw I was using which was a bastard to compress compared to my
other one.

It's always useful to learn more techniques - but I'm not sure I'll bother
with that one for anything of good quality. Thanks anyway.

I'm actually cutting down some CR-V screw bits - hence the need for new
blades. That stuff is well hard!

Job very sucessful so far, though - I've shortened some alternative 1/4"
bits* to fit my Topeak Toolbar - which is a very nice multi tool by the
way (would make a good Christmas pressie): A small & lightweight
attractive neat handle to take allen key & screwdriver bits - and even
sockets if you get some separately. Phillips No.2 would be better for
bikes than the No.1 supplied and a smaller plain slot too - so I'm "making
my own" (and some other extras).

* Standard ones fit the tool head but they're too long to fit inside its
storage compartment.

I'll bet if he tried really hard he could come up with something even
more stupid. He's clearly the man for the job.

What simple jobs can't YOU do? Go on. There are jobs that I personally
regard as very simple that some brain surgeons and rocket scientists can't
do. We all have different skills.

> oh i forgot how to change a blade in Hacksaw

No, it was a JUNIOR hacksaw (and a crap one at that). Do you know the
difference?

You are quite right - it does leave a ragged and sharp end. I forgot to
mention that I then tidy up with a file - producing a perfectly flat
surface. Another reason to put on two nuts. Also apply a little Vaseline to
inhibit rust.

Of course I figured out that that was how it was probably supposed to work
but it didn't bloody work when I tried it, so I thought there might be
some extra special knack or alternative method that I didn't know about.

I was keen to get a job finished at the time. The replies convinced me
that I just had to compress harder! I've now found a saw that's easier to
manage. The one was I was first using was awkwardly shaped and not very
springy.

I think we all have these funny moments at times when we fail to do
something simple. Anyway, there was no need to be so damn rude to me.
What's the point?

Yes thanks, I do don't I. I think we'll call it quits Mr Power Ranger
:-)
