A man charged with murdering a cyclist on Valentine's Day has appeared in court.

Shazeb Khalid, of no fixed abode, appeared before Reading Magistrates' Court this morning (February 21).

The 24 year old is being held on remand, and was brought up from the cells wearing grey prison overalls. The public gallery was packed with press and police.

Mr Khalid did not enter a plea, with magistrates instead opting to send the case to Reading Crown Court. The defendant will appear there tomorrow (February 22).

He stands charged with murder over the death of Vignesh Raman, a 38-year-old cyclist, who died on February 14.

Mr Raman was reportedly hit by a car in Addington Road, and later died at Royal Berkshire Hospital.

In all, eight men have been arrested in connection with the incident - but only Mr Khalid has been charged.

The other seven, all arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, have been released on police bail.

Was there any word as to the motive?

Eight men must be a record attempt at the old switcheroo trick.
Lots of "perverting the course of justice" charges in the pipeline there.
