After some thought, I'd like to go back to SPDs for commuting. What I
*want* are these;

https://www.londonbicycleworkshop.com/94131/products/giro-republic-lx-cycling-shoes-leather-brown.aspx

Leather, wide(ish) replaceable walking pads, laces. In short, if I'm
lazy, I can wear them in the office.

Anyone got any ideas? The Vaude TVL Sykkel MTBs seem closest but lack
replaceable walking pads, which if I'm wearing them a lot might be an
issue. Yes, I could leave shoes in the office.

That would be ideal, yes. As long as you can restrict yourself to riding
under clear sky. ;)

That is what I do. My feet like getting out of the sweaty cycle shoes.
And as soon as the road gets wet, they are not really office compatible
any more, either because they are soiled, or (if soaking wet) they
stink.

Cheerio,

And if I am riding enough to get sweaty I don't want to wear office
clothes to ride in either.

The only time I didn't shower and change clothes was when doing short
Brompton assisted trips to the train stations and I just wear normal
shoes on the Brom.

THese days on the trike I have a platform that clicks into the
clipless pedals[1] and has a powergrip-like retaining strap (a toe strap)
that does the job of retaining feet on shorter rides. Wouldn't use it
on the full ride to work or even the 5k ride to the "train station
that avoids the mess that is the Sydney CBD" as it doesn't give you a
really good pulling platform up hills, but it's fine for the shops.

I can see the need for a good walking shoe that won't frighten the
horses if you are doing a lot of short trips to different offices and
for some reason were using clipless but for the commute... change at
work. (I take my shoes but they are very light "barefoot" boots and
hardly noticed amongst the general crap I carry)

[1] bought from a kickstarter years ago with the idea what I might use
it on the Brom but never did. I thread the strap through it and the
pedal.
