Due to a "chest infection". The "enforced" rest will do him good.
Now let's see what that could help.

What could it help? I'm not au fait enough with cycle racing to work
out what you're implying...

It is claimed he is the main supporting rider for Chris Froome who
will be Sky's team leader in the Tour de France this year. As such he
is required to be in optimal health. This also means should Froome be
taken out or he loses much time then Wiggins may take over as team
leader. It's quite apparent that Wiggins cannot lead the race for
three weeks so it may be that Froome will use his energies in the
first two weeks to tire out the main opposing contenders and then
Froome will keep the opposition occupied in the last week while
Wiggins gains time on the flat stages. There's many ways it can be
played and the announcement of Froome being team leader is important
in setting the scene for Sky, whichever way they wish to play.
