To all you skint climbers out there:

If you know of a cheap gear shop - or indeed one of the many
factory shops out there, why not let everybody else know
about it too! Email me with the address and any other info
and I'll make the directory available on the net soon-ish.

Here's my contribution:

Daleswear factory shop in Ingleton - good for fleece, all-in-one
caving furries, etc.

Jack Wolfskin UK distributor in Carlisle - v. cheap seconds, last
years colours etc.

North Face factory in Port Glasgow - great when they've got their
annual sale on - otherwise no go!

North Cape factory (fleeces etc.) in Stirling. Gave up the shop
a few years ago, but may sometimes make a deal on fleece.

Mountain equipment Factory shop (Mountain delight, I think?) in
Glossop (Peaks).

Any more for any more?

Matt (lohm...@icrf.icnet.uk)

Rohan have a factory shop in Milton Keynes, I think, but I know for sure
that the Edinburgh branch on George St. has a seconds department that
allows you to get their stuff at prices approaching the sensible, which
isn't normally the case.

Weatherguard is a contract factory near Halbeath, just off J4 on the M90
as it heads up into Fife. They *occaisionally* have contracts with
outdoor gear firms, and if so occaisionally have stuff in. I've seem
Karrimor, Rohan and ME stuff in there over the years, but it's getting
less common.

Pete.

I understand this one has closed - or is closing soon. Presumably it's so popular
that no one buys JW in the the north west anymore...

VauDe in Haltwhistle (twixt Carlisle and Hexham) is excellent, especially for
tents.

Phoenix in Amble (north of Newcastle) used to be just friday afternoons and was
excellent value, but I haven't been for ages, last few times I went there was
very little and it wasn't that cheap.

There's also a factory in Alston (Mountain Designs?? something like that) which
used to have periodical sales, they now have a proper (like not so cheap) shop in
the town. They also sell end of roll materials (fleece, pertex, etc).

J Barbour and Sons (of the jacket fame) have a factory shop in South Shields for
all you serious outdoor types ;-)

cheers,

Nige.

There's one in Glossop, but I can't remember the name of it. Isn't there a
Karrimor one too...?

Sorry to butt in, being new to climbing and all that, one of the best factory
shops I know of is the Karrimor one as mentioned before, I got a three layer
gore-tex for 110 quid due to shaded fabric on sleeve-who cares plus you cant
tell, also the rucksacs are dirt cheap some are half the shop price is a
jaguar 80+20 (with the full SA back system) 97 quid, in Blacks etc there about
200 also you can get a good deal on fleeces, the Eiger fleece I saw was 80 in
Blacks there about 120 I think, well worth a phone call or a visit plus the
faults are really stupid ie stich in the wrong place or shaded fabric, also in
Glossop there is Magic Mountain who do all the Duofold stuff, Mountain Eqiup,
Ron hill stuff-seconds tracksters 5 quid, they also do loads of top quality
sleeping bags, even if they dont have the seconds you want they carry their
full stock of all the gear they do do, also in Glossop there is the Abris
factory shop you can see the sign for it if you come into Glossop from the
Manchester end, now I dont know what type of gear they do good or bad but it
might be worth popping in if you visiting the area, hope you find this info
Ok, also one of our students a few years ago told me that Troll do a sale once
a year in Glossop to get rid of their seconds but I cant say for sure maybe
someone else knows....

Hmm. Somewhere at the bottom right of your keyboard Jim, you'll find
a key with a little dot on it. Its called a full stop, and many
people find it invaluable.

They have a small factory shop in UpperMill and hire the village hall for a
blowout sale once a year.

Calange have occasional sales of seconds and samples at very good prices in
Stockport area, notification is by getting on their mailing list.

Factory shops that I know of are
Magic Mountain (Glossop)
Abris (Glossop)
and Troll in Uppermill.
Troll usually do two sales each year taking over the local village hall
and pilling it high with all their gear. Great bargins to be had there.
This year I have been told that they aren't having a summer sale :-(
but the shop is still worth a visit if you are in the area.

Caving Supplies in Ingelton make good fleeces, and waterproofs, their
shop/factory is in the main street. I know plenty of people who buy gear
from here, I've had several jackets myself. furthermore, they'll make
them to measure if you want at no extra cost. They also do a mail order
service.

Correction to what I said yesterday, Dalesware is the factory shop in
Ingleton, not Caving Supplies. Sorry for any confusion that may have
been caused.

Not bad - fitting all this into one sentence.

Full stops and paragraphs would make it much easier to follow.

Phoenix have a factory shop in Amble, Northumberland, in which they sell
the waterproofs, fleeces, and tents that they make (for Karrimor)
The last time I went they opened Tues-Fri, 2-4.45pm, but that
could have changed. The phone number is (01665)710934.
The address to go to is;
Phoenix Mountaineering,
Croquetdale Trading Estate,
Amble, Morpeth,
NE65 OPE
Berghaus used to have a factory shop, but don't any more because of
burglaries, and North Face do a yearly sale a bit like troll, although I
can't remember when or where.

Dear All,
For some reason, I thought that this was to do with people finding out if they
could and can purchase cheaper climbing gear to save a bit of brass but I have
now come to the conclusion that it is to do with my spelling and punctuation,
now personally I would rather find out about cheap quality gear but we can
always talk about the price of sponge cake or even god forbide baked beans
so long as it's spelt right and the punctuation is correct so it's up to you I
would rather read about saving some cash than complaining about spelling etc,
but hey I'm easy.
I appologise to all those who may be offended by the above and I thank thank
those who like me dont care.
