Hi

Anybody know how to enable/disable the front passenger airbag on a Mk4
Golf? I want to be able to switch it on or off whenever a baby seat is in
place. I don't really want to pay a visit to a VW dealer every time I
need to do this.

Cheers

Kim

I have a W Reg Bora and have an idea the air bag system is fairly similar -
you should find a button, similar in shape to the button that opens your
fuel filler cap, if you open the passsenger door and look at the base of the
door pillar. If you press it, it may light up although I`m not near my car
at the moment so can`t confirm !, but either way once pressed it should
disable your airbag. Think there`s also one on the drivers side as well. If
Mk4 Golf`s are differnent then my apologies although I`m sure someone on
this excellant newsgroup will point you successfully in the right direction.

I think this is an option on the golf, my 2001 1.6SE doesn't have a
passenger air bag disable switch and I'm sure I've read you need to
disable it with the VAG diagnostics equipment. So it's a trip to the
dealers really and probably at least half an hours labour cost :(

We do put the baby in the back when we're both in the car (it's a 5 door
so it's no problem), but my wife would like to put him in the front when
she's on her own so she can keep an eye on him. If the airbag was
disabled permanently (or at least until junior no longer needs the car
seat) then whoever gets to sit in the passenger set won't have the airbag
available should they need it.

This is why I'd like to be able to enable/disable it at will.

Just a thought to the guy with the bora, i always thought the switch by the
drivers side pillar, in a golf was to disable the interior sensors for the
alarm?.....my Turbo doesnt have one on the other side, so is prob an extra
option as mentioned. I know you were talking about a bora but i would guess
they are all the same. Maybe i got my wires crossed but just thought i would
ask anyways..

Why not put the baby in the front all the time and get the dealer to disable the
air-bag ?

I bought a 5 door car for this very reason & always place our daughter in the
back, safest place anyway........

My wife's new SEAT Ibiza (=Polo) has a key operated switch in the glove box
to disable the passenger airbag. I think this is an (expensive) option on
Polo, and my Passat doesn't have it at all...
Not much help I'm afraid.

James
