This morning I got a STOP, CHECK COOLANT, SERVICE MANUAL message.
I decided to ignore it as I was only removing the 2000 GOLF GTI 1.8T from
out of the garage to clean it.
After cleaning my Golf I started it up again with no problems and no STOP
message.

This sort of false messages seem to be common, does anyone else agree?

Check the coolant level, I occasionally get that if the coolant level is
a little low, once you've started the car and moved it a little the
engines warmed up the waters expanded therefore no longer tripping the
low coolant.

Hello There!
I have exactly the same problem on my 2001 VW Golf 1.8T. I had it
serviced independently (not VW) a month ago, and now have started
getting the STOP, CHECK COOLANT, SERVICE MANUAL warning when the engine
is cold. Once the engine is warm it seems to disappear. I have
checked the coolant level when it is cold in the morning, and it is
just above the max mark....Could it be that it is too full? This is my
second VW and the warning lights make your life a misery!!! I have
read in a couple of places that VW's are very picky about the coolant,
and it may need to be VW approved coolant or something, but i only want
to take it back into VW as a last resort....

Don't think the sensor can tell what the coolant is, though it could be
picking up that it is too high as I think the levels are for when the
engine is warm, I used to wonder why my kept spitting out coolant till I
twigged I was filling to max at cold, now I fill it to min at cold and
don't lose any coolant.

I do use the VW coolant in the Golf though even if she is 18yrs old as
it isn't that expensive to use genuine.

Have you been adding just water or the properly diluted coolant? Maybe it can
tell the strength of the coolant, or isn't it quite that clever?

Sometimes simple = better.

Thanks Jon B ---- 22/11/2005

I brought some 'Mobil advance' Antifreeze from Halford's - Ł6.99p

The sensor is two prongs that detect the presence of liquid. You can see the
prongs when you remove the screw cap from the expansion tank.
The sensor cannot detect the type or mixture of the coolant/antifreeze.

So anyway my coolant/antifreeze level was just fine, the level was
in-between the max and min.
I thought thou, that I would top it up to the max, in fact I topped it up a
little over the max.

Also I disconnected and reconnected the sensor cable about five times, just
to make sure it was getting a clean connection.

Since topping up the coolant/antifreeze I have had no problems.

I don't think I would use non-VW approved coolant concentrate - G12 or G12a
isn't that much from places like German Swedish and French (G12a is about Ł5 inc
VAT for 1.5 litres) or Euro Carparts. I think even the dealers aren't charging
stupid prices, but it would be worth checking. Does the label say approved by
... and VW ?

Yes it is approved by VW.
The concentrate mixture for coolant is very wide, meaning that you can 'top
up' with antifreeze or water and the mixture is adequate.

Mine does this all winter (also a 2000 1.8T). I just ignore it now. It's
been serviced by VW all its life, and I also have checked the coolant level
myself. It generally shuts up after about 2 mins driving. I wonder if the
sensor prongs have got some sort of coating on them over time that makes
them less sensitive in the cold weather?

Since;

1. Topping generously up the coolant/antifreeze.
2. Disconnected and reconnected the sensor cable about five times, just to

make sure it was getting a clean connection.

I have had NO problems since.

This another of the Golfs common problems. Sometimes it just needs the plug
cleaned, often it will nedd a new coolant reservoir as the sensor is part of
the reservoir (bottle) I believe.
