When I've been driving for longer than about 2 hours, the steering wheel on my
97 mk3 Golf develops a strange scraping noise when I turn it. I've had this
occur on my previous Golf, and had it fixed when I had it serviced once - the
mechanic said it was just the horn contacts getting dry and scraping a bit.
It's just had a full service, so I'm loathe to take it in to a garage to sort
this out if I can do it myself - would a liberal squirt of WD40 down the back
where the wheel joins the dashboard sort this out? That's where the noise seems
to be coming from anyway.

It might, but it would be worthwhile removing the plastic cowl and
having a look first. There's usually just a cople of screws holding it.

Yes, driver side only. How does this affect the problem?

wasn't gonna offer any suggestions if it did have airbags as they scare me!
