Can you actually change all 4 spark plugs on a 1998 1.6 GL Golf (AFT Engine
code) without taking the plenum/manifold off?
I've done the outer two without too much difficulty, the middle two I can't
even get the plug leads off the plugs :-(
If I buy a long reach plug boot remover I think I can manage step one, but
will I be able to get the plugs out with a wibbley wobbley extension and a
universal joint? Is this how it's done or do I need to take the manifold
off and/or the plenum (there is a joint in the inlet tract)?
I can see why they haven't been changed for a long time!
Cheers
Neil
Have you taken the air filter off and pushed it to the side to allow a
better reach? Spray some lube down there, then just grimp the spark plugs
and yank off. You'll probably break the leads but they could more than
likely do with replacing too.
Unfortunately the plugs were in so tight I was too scared to risk taking
them out.... Sprayed some penetrating oil on them and put it all back
together.
One for the garage me thinks :-( Or will try again with a hot engine.
Cheers

Yeah my local garage have sympathy for me when I get a rusted nut, guess
they think at least he tried to do it himself.
