Uneven brake wear

I bought a 2001 Golf IV (still just warranty) about three months ago. The
problem is that one of the rear brake pads has an uneven wear- it has about
1mm left and all the others have between 4 and 5mm. The car's done about
30k.

The question is what causes this and is it classed as a fault and if so
would this be covered under manufacturer warranty since all services have
been carried out by VW dealer and according to schedule? I have just
recently had the car serviced and they have recommended that I have the pad
replaced but they did not mention anything about the uneven wear- I noticed
this myself today. I have also noticed since summer that after washing the
car especially the wheels with the hose, the brake would 'stick' to the
disks- I know this when I come to use the car after leaving it overnight or
for a few hours. When I try to pull away, I can feel the car needs a bit
more effort as if it's driving over a very small bump. I would then hear a
what sounds like a bang of a spring. The car then drives normally until the
next wash. Also, should the pads be replaced in pairs?

TIA

When I say should the pads replaced in pairs, I mean should the pads be
replaced on both the rear wheels even though the other wheel has good pads
on it? Thanks again.

I had exactly this on my 02 Bora TDI (at about 35k miles). The nearside
'outside' pad was down to the metal virtually, the inside one had about 3 mm
on it and the offside both pads had about 5mm on them! Dealer said that it
is not unusual for a Golf/Bora, and that the rear brakes do tend to bind
slightly, but if you try to claim warranty on it, they will deny all
knowledge of the problem! I was amazed also that the rear pads wore out at
35k and the front ones (original) were good for nearly 45k before the
warning light came on - when it was serviced at about 41k they told me that
they were low, but the light would come one with about 1k to go on them!
However, (on my Bora at least) the rears don't have the wear sensor in them.

As far as I am aware, you should replace both sets of rear pads at the same
time, even though one wheel still has reasonable pads.

As an aside, shortly after the rear pads were changed, my car rolled
backwards while parked (with the handbrake on). Again, I am lead to
believe that this can be a common problem - I believe due to the rear discs
cooling after a journey and hence contracting. Moral is ALWAYS leave it in
gear (I do now!!!!)

I have booked my car for a warranty repair for other problems but I will
mention about the pad problem. On a different issue, I haven't has the car
for long- in fact it's my first VW and I find there are niggly problems. For
example, the warranty repair which I have booked my for are

a. intermittent light warning buzzer- sometimes it works and sometimes it
doesn't- I think I have noticed that this depends on the weather!!!
b. one of the heating elements on the rear screen is not working
c. the driver door has a very annoying squeek when you open/ shut the door-
again it seems to depend on the weather. When I had my car in for the
service I wanted to them to give it some oil but it wasn't sqeeking on the
day!!! I gave it some WD40 but it's still there. I know it's only a minor
problem but it really is annoying and I'm being fussy.
d. the oil consumption is very thirsty (car is 2.0 GTi) and apparently
according to the dealer, this is normal. I Googled it this seems to be the
case.

Do you have any other problems in running this car?

I have had three Hondas previous to this VW and none of them had anything
go wrong. I probably get flamed for this since this a VW ng. Nevertheless, I
still like the Golf but my heart goes to Honda.

BTW I will make a mental note of the rolling problem you'd experienced.

Always replace pads as a set to keep braking even both sides; different pad
materials may vary in the friction they produce or behave differently as
they heat up.

A friend with a 2.0L New Beetle has had a modification for excessive oil
consumption carried out recently under guarantee. I don't know the specific
circumstances or the level of consumption considered excessive by VW.
Historically VWs have been noted for low oil consumption, but I hear the
2.0L is an exception.
