I have recently taken delivery of a new Mk4 Golf GT TDI (130). Im having
problems with the rear wiper. Sometimes when the car is started the rear
wiper will come on & then switch off again. My local dealer said they cannot
locate the problem as it is only intermittent. Please can anybody help?

Ian. (N. Ireland)

It is possible that the pipe going to the washer jet is loose and leaking
water onto the wiper motor. I had this problem on mine (1999 golf turbo) and
it also cause the alarm to go off.

I would be interested in a solution to this problem as well. My
sister's new Mk4 TDI 100 SE suffers from the same problem. Like
yourself, as the problem is intermittent so she hasn't taken it to the
dealer yet.

Terry (N. Ireland too, maybe its something to do with the weather :-)

I had the same problem with my MK4 a few months back. The switch block for
the wiper stick was replaced and it's been fine ever since. I did find that
mine only did it when I had to shake the steering wheel to free the steering
lock.

Speaking of Rear wiper problems my rear wash wipe also packed up, the pump
worked but no water squirted. After a few weeks I noticed a damp patch
appearing in the passenger side of the roof lining towards the rear hatch.
Turns out the supply pipe at the point it exits the car to the rear Hatch
had become disconnected and was simply pumping water over the roof trim. Reg
Vardy had to replace the roof lining (still doesn't look right).

My car is a 2001 1.6S and excluding service visits has had to visit Reg
Vardy service department on 19 occasions for various faults the last one was
the water pump packing up (day after 30k service). 16 of these visits where
related to problems caused by previous visits to Reg Vardy. Has anyone else
experienced their incompetence?

I can give more detailed examples if needed (airbag light, temp gauge,
central locking, key encoding (that's a classic), rear wiper, rear washer,
interior lights the list goes on. Most of witch started after previous fault
was fixed.

Don't get me wrong I love VW I've i've owned 4 and I'm about to order a V5
just not from Reg Vardy.

Rich

Out of curiosity, what is the last letter on the chassis number (not the
final digits), ie the X in WVW---------X123456. Don't post all the number
for security reasons, just the last letter. Thanks.

I had this problem too. Sounds like a common fault. Operate the rear wash
for a bit and then look for water at the rear bootlid catch.

For me it made the rear wiper start/stop randomly (even in the middle of
its travel) and also the boot light went out permanently.

I've just had a new wiper motor fitted under warranty after Cameron VW in
Perth found that the rear washer fluid was leaking into the motor - maybe
worth checking??!!
