Hi all,
On an 02 plate polo, 1.9 SDI, there is an issue with the glowplug light. It
flashed on the last minute of the drive to work today, and on checking the
handbook it states that there is an issue with the engine computer, take it
to a dealer. On returning to the car that evening the car started as normal
and the glowplug light went out immediately. About a minute into the drive
it started flashing again, so the driver stopped and called the RAC out.
When they arrived he plugged his computer in which found no faults. His
technical department reckoned it was a minor fault with the software and the
car would be OK to drive. 5 minutes into the drive home the flashing light
went out and has stayed off since.

Suggestions? Nothing logged in the computer according to the RAC man, I`m
about to plug VAG-COM into it on my laptop and see if that pulls anything
up. Any other suggestions for a fix, condisering that the computer doesn`t
seem to know why it`s flashing the light? :-)

Thanks in advance for your help!

While I was doing this, nothing happened with the lights on the dashboard,
but I was revving it a bit (to see what happened, and to explain the miracle
of an electronic accelerator to the fiance, who owns the car :-) ). I`ve
driven it a few times recently, and not noticed any problems with the car.
Any suggestions now? :-)

Is it the 'engine with lightning bolt across it' light?? People seem to call
it many different things!

Mine came on (02 PD150 Bora) when both 'wing' brake lights failed, along
with an under dash warning buzzer!!! Scared the **** out of me!

So it *could* be a bulb failing and when he brakes the ECU notices a
fault???

Gotta be worth checking...

Hi Andy,
it`s an amber light shaped like 2 turns of a coiled spring. It comes on
initially to let you know when the glow plugs have warmed up enough to start
the engine, or (apparently, according to the handbook in my car, a Passat
with the TDI version of the engine) flashes to indicate a fault with the
engine management computer.

I`ve plugged Vag-Com into it and have posted the results in another
message - hopefully they`ll make sense to someone :-)

don't some VWs put management lights on when brake light bulbs blow?

There you go!!
I meant to mention before that a dodgy brake switch would do the same as
faulty bulbs, its just bought up a different warning light to my Bora.
99% certain!

Check the bulbs for dodgy contacts, if all OK change the switch. ( If its
anything like the Golf sw' be careful as if you twist it into its 'locked'
position before installing it, you'll need to get another one! not my
experience, but MKIV.net info, there's loads of advice re brake
light/warning lamps there).

When it happened to me, the drivers manual told me to drive immediately and
carefully to the nearest VW dealer to have the 'fault' diagnosed! A bit OTT
for my liking for just a brake lamp blown.

Cheers

The fiance left for work before I woke up, so I`m not going to get a chance
to look at it until tonight. She was followed by the RAC for a distance
after he checked the car out, and he didn`t notice anything, but I`ll get
the brake lights checked tonight and see if that might be it.

Thanks for all your help so far, everyone!
