What is a "stop light" on a car? Does it mean the same as a brake light?

Thanks!

Do you mean a red light on the dashboard with the word "Stop" in it?

That is the car's way of telling you something is sufficiently screwed
that it is probably appropriate to stop and go no further. Eg brake
fluid level, overheating.

Though mine comes on (flashing) if you turn the aircon on - what it
means in that case is the aircon isn't behaving so it thinks it's
overheating but it's lying.

The alternative is are you leftpondian, in which case the "stop lights"
is the same as what we call "brake lights".

If it's the former, which car? If it's one you're looking to buy, I
would suggest unlooking there.

Thanks.

I just meant what the inspector I hired to look at a secondhand car for
me referred to on his report form as a "stop light". One of them wasn't
working. I guessed it probably meant a brake light, because he referred
to all the other lights but not to "brake lights".

Adrian may think I'm an idiot, but I'm no carhead and I've only ever
heard brake lights referred to as "brake lights".

I've now spoken to the inspector and confirmed that he did mean a brake
light. The car has a new MOT, so I was a little surprised. Anyway I have
now got the dealer to fix it, and bought the car.

"Stop lights" seems a silly term for brake lights, if you ask me!

A long long time ago brake lights would have a nice chrome trim with the
word "STOP" on them.

Although this a USA advert the similar thing was to be found on many UK
cars back in period.
