I've read in a number of places that as long as you have 2 keys which
can start the car then you can do some key hokey-cokey and get a new key
programmed. If this is the case, then getting another remote key should
be quite straightforward, and not too costly as already have 2 working keys.
However, I've also read that it may not be the case, and it's a dealer
only thing.
Can anyone confirm - ideally, if they've done it themselves on an late
2005 Mk2 model (in case they changed things earlier/later).
Thanks
David
I assume you mean the new shape Focus, rather than one of the last original
shapes?
If its the new one, then you need to visit the dealer. AFAIK they took away
the self programming function with the new car.
Tim..
Thanks for that. That's what I suspected. My solution to getting a 2nd
remote key then is to get a cheap 2nd hand remote key, cut the blade off
and program the remote buttons to operate the doors etc. The
instructions for this *are* included in the manual, and I've not heard
anyone suggest that this is no longer possible. We'll use the normal
dumb spare key to start it as we currently do, but also have the button
part of the remote on the keyring for opening/locking.
I'll probably have to remove the transponder (I think I can see it
inside the remote) in case it confuses the immobiliser with it being
near to another key.
The reason we want a 2nd remote key is that after a day of using the
dumb key, it appears that the only way of disabling the alarm when
unlocking with it is to put the key into the ignition within a few
seconds of unlocking. Unfortunately, loading young kids into the car
often means that's difficult, with obvious noisy results!

Nothing to stop you trying to programme a new key using the standard
procedure though- if it doesnt work, it doesnt work!
