Hi

I have a 1988 escort, and whilst driving along, the speedo (and mileometer)
suddenly stopped working. I assume that the cable has broken, how can I
clarify this and is it easy to replace?

The only way to clarify this is by removing speedo cable from Speedo
head and driving down the road. If the core doesn't spin then its a good
bet.

I have a 1989 Ford Escort but unfortunately I haven't experienced that
problem. I do know, however, that the speedometer cable is connected to the
gearbox by means on of a lipped nut like thing which simply unbolts and then
you can withdraw the cable from there. I dunno if that's any help, but
that's all the work I've had to do with the speedo cable before when
replacing the clutch.

Yours,

Bryan Lurring

It may be the cable but it's usually common in these motors for the
speedometer drive gear to snap, it's a plastic cog that fits into the
top of the transmission housing which spins the cable. I had this happen
recently to my Orion. To get at the drive cog you need to unscrew the
Speedo cable at the transmission end and lever out the securing pin
which secures the speedometer drive pinion bearing to the transmission
housing. Remove the drive gear housing and you'll probably find the stem
of the drive cog has snapped off. I think it cost me around £5 for a new
one at the local ford dealers.

Hi Lisa,
Could just be a broken cable (easy to replace) but a typical Ford problem with
their gearbox, is in the gearbox differential (where the speedo cable 'reads'
from). If the diff (well its bearings) are breaking up, then the speedo
normally reads a bit wayward (up/down etc) for a few hundred/thosand miles then
gives up the ghost completely. Have you had an intermittent speedo reading
lately?
