FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The FAQ is mainly contained on my web space at
http://www.motors.freeuk.com/faq/index.htm All the Links and Info is
on there.

The pages so far up there are:-
http://www.motors.freeuk.com/faq/ford.htm A few Ford Questions
http://www.motors.freeuk.com/faq/electric.htm Electrics
(trailer wires)
http://www.motors.freeuk.com/faq/mote.htm MOT Emissions

http://www.motors.freeuk.com/faq/motl.htm MOT Lights
http://www.motors.freeuk.com/faq/oil.htm Oil Problems
http://www.motors.freeuk.com/faq/plugs.htm Spark Plugs
http://www.motors.freeuk.com/faq/tbelts.htm T Belts

(Please read before asking about unleaded conversion)
http://www.motors.freeuk.com/faq/link1.htm Manufacturers Sites
http://www.motors.freeuk.com/faq/link2.htm Other sites

A couple of General things.

(Q) What information is needed.

There are many regulars in the group with extensive knowledge on most
maintenance jobs, unfortunately few of us are mind readers, Please
describe the car fully, Make, Model, Year, Engine size/type/code, Fuel
system (if relevant) etc etc. What the current problem is and the
steps already tried. More details, the more chance of help.
If it is an emission fail, please also include ALL the gas figures.

(Q) Can I advertise.

There is nothing in the uk.rec.cars.maintenance charter about
advertising, but none trade adverts either buying or selling have
occasionally appeared. Please start your header FS.... or WTB.... but
NO binaries are allowed. As far as trade adverts are concerned send me
your web site and I will include it on the links page (a spam type
post in the NG is unlikely to get in here), then join in the postings
(with a suitable sig) and help others!!
(Don't bother posting Spam, - I WILL report it to your ISP)
*** For info I have been reporting all cases of spam in this NG ****

I've been submitting the usual listings every month for 18 months or
so. The list of what I think are useful web sites grows longer and
longer. I have no probs in carrying on doing so, but thought it only
fair to ask for a general opinion as to if they are found to be useful
or un necessary.

Helpful they well may be, but it might be better to stick those on a web
page, that would reduce the FAQ page at least.

This was why I was asking, I started a simple FAQ + links back in
Jan99, It was only half the present length and quickly grew bigger and
bigger. I then put the "faq text" onto the webspace but kept the links
section each month, that knocked back the then ever increasing long
posts.

Most of these links are what I pickup from this NG, adding a few each
month. They are also on the web site, but that is only updated every 3
months or so. Now even this list of links is getting very long. I have
no problem adding new ones and posting once a month. Overall it is
probably as good a list of motor related sites as there is.

If anyone wishes to add sections to the FAQ itself (At the moment I
get very little time) then please just send me an Email in the same
style (Question / Answer) and I will upload it into the appropriate
section/create new section.

I can either carry on as is, posting it once a month and including the
web site URL in my posting sig or just post a very simple 20/30 line
FAQ "Notice" once a month that points to the web URL.

As I said I do not mind which (or none at all), they each have
advantages/disadvantages, but as its starting to get very long I do
not want it to become an annoyance to the users of this NG.

And this is why I am asking for opinions, rather than just carrying on
when they may have become an annoyance.

That cannot be argued against, a good list it is.

That is a more common way to do it in other newsgroups. Some just quote
a URL for the whole FAQ. Your last suggestion is more likely to be read
by more people.

I was not suggesting it was an annoyance, it just might be more sensible
to put them on a small web page. It might even save you time, as you
would have to compile and upload less often.

Your work is certainly appreciated, and I was only attempting to provide
a sensible suggestion.
