I tried turning the lights on to see if they looked dim, but only the
sidelights would come on, not the headlights. I thought they looked a
bit dim, but I'm not at all sure. I'm pretty sure the headlights were
both working OK before, so I think it's too much of a coincidence that
they would both happen to fail at the same time as the starter.
Is there something that would cause the starter and headlights to be
disabled at the same time? A common fuse or relay, or perhaps if the
system detects a flat battery it disables high drain components to
protect it from completely draining? Or maybe the lights simply won't
work with the engine off and/or door open?
It seemed to be turning over normally for the first few days of the cold
spell, but I believe cold can kill batteries rather abruptly and the
car's last few journeys were very short.

the first thing would be to give it a jump start or charge the battery and
try again.
I had problems starting on my Mondeo 1.8LX. (See my earlier posting).
It turned out to be the starter motor was not cranking the engine just
whirring round. Fault was diagnosed as the freezing of oil/dirt on the
shaft that the starter cog slides along. OK once it warmed up. Garage
fitted Recon Starter without attempting to clean and re-lubricate. I
felt a bit ripped off there but needed the car urgent. Is your starter
just turning without engaging the engine?

It was whirring without turning the engine a few weeks ago. We had the
motor repaired and we've had our fingers crossed ever since that it
wasn't caused by a faulty dual mass flywheel because we've heard that's
a common but expensive problem on these engines :-(.
But this time it's not making any noise at all, not even a solenoid
click, and the lights don't dim, so I think it's something different.

A duff DMF won't cause the starter to fail to engage - that can only be
the starter.
Equally, though, if there's no click or any starter noise, that can only
be an electrical problem - (very) flat battery, bad connections, or a
duff safety switch somewhere in there.
If the headlights won't turn on with the ignition on, and it won't crank,
do any dash lights come on?

Yes, it lit up like a Christmas tree as usual, and the interior light
comes on too.

Or missing teeth on the flywheel. But I've read that what happens with
Mondeos is that the faulty DMF chucks out swarf which gets jammed in the
starter.

Check the cable from the battery to the chassis.
