Hi All,

Does anyone have any opinions or problems with the Bosch PMS 100 or the
Lucas YWB 220?

Are there any other portable scopes worth looking at for automotive use?

TIA
Garry

I have used a Fluke 123 for 3 years, bit pricey, around £750 but highly
recommended. Just in case you're interested in what the screen looks like,
go here www.transfix.freeserve.co.uk/uploads.htm for a couple of
screenshots.

Thanks, I have been on the Fluke site and seen screenshots for the Fluke 98
(AKA Bosch PMS 100). There are also some new scopes; the 192, 196 and 199
which have faster sampling rates, I am not sure how fast they need to be for
automotive use, the 98 is 40ns- 50mhz, twice as fast as the 123 (and twice
the price)

The little OZ fox pen scope is cheap (under £90) and versatile for quick
tests wheen checking for injector signals, but to look at the trace in
detail you need to couple it to a PC. Picoscope used to sell these but there
is no longer any mention of them on the Pico web site.

Picos own PC based scopes are also excellent and worth a look see
http://www.picotech.com/

Maplin had a special on the hand held Vellman scope recently but I think it
is finished now even so the Vellman is good value for money at about £120.

Thanks Andy, the Pico looks interesting, I will be having a look.

Garry,

You don't need a high sample rate for automotive use, there's nothing in a
car system that runs anywhere near 20MHZ, which is the sample rate of the
123. I have a couple of colleagues that use PC scopes on a laptop and they
report good results, the best thing about the 123 is it's pure portability
and rugged construction, I have'nt "abused" mine as such, but it has'nt had
an easy life either and had paid for itself inside of 3 months usage,
finally I really like the trendlog feature which is a massive help for
capturing intermittent events, I know it's a hard choice, to conclude, if I
ran over my 123 by accident tomorrow, I would have another one bought and
shipped to me by the day after. Regards,

everything it says it will. I don't use it as much as I thought I
would....How often do you need to check injector duration waveforms in real
life? You'll use it mainly for ABS sensors.

KV readings are better on 'real-time' scope -I have an old Sun 1010 for this
purpose.

Joe

Thanks for your comments Joe,
Yes the PMS 100 is £1900. Crank/cam sensors and KV would be the main use.
Injector duration can be read with a DVM (probably not as accurately).
The PMS @ 50MHZ is slower than the Fluke 199 (also 2k) but the 199 is real
time (2.5 GHZ).......hence the questions on scope speed requirement on
automotive use.
I may go for the 123 (20MHZ) at £900 as a new user...... not too much money
sat on the shelf then!!

Thanks
