Hi

My Dad has been quoted £500 from a local dealer to replace a timing belt
on a Skoda Fabia at 55,000 miles.

This seems incredibly excessive to me - the one in my Astra cost about
£80 just before Christmas.

Comments or advice, anyone?

Thanks

First off, what engine is this?

Second, try telephoning another Skoda dealer to see if they're quoting the
same price...

Which engine? & if it's out of warranty then there's no point paying the
dealer, it's not rocket science on any of them.

1.4 petrol, 8v I think. Definitely not 16v or diesel.

It is out of warranty now. The other local dealer in Newcastle is
Benfield and will charge an arm and a leg as well if my experience with
Nissan cars is anything to go by.

We've been looking in the papers and will try some local garages tomorrow.

Thanks chaps!

Ive not had any remotely high-for-the-work-done Nissan bills from my dealer
(yet) Routine servicing has been as cheap as my local garage. (oil service-
70 quid, intermediate 160, major 240)

Try Walkerville Garage on Shields Road as I get my car (Octavia 1.9TDI)
serviced there - 0191 262 3932 - they did my cambelt / idlers /
waterpump on the same day when the waterpump siezed at 60000 miles,
they're reasonably priced and get a lot of Skodas from the local taxi
fraternity.

Hi,

I have a 4 and an half year Fabia 1.9TDI and I have been getting it
Serviced & MOT'ed at Silbury Skoda up at Cramlington. What I noticed
is that the service costs have increased and not 100% convinced that
everything gets done.
My service is due soon and they say the timing belt needs changing
because it over 4 years old (although it's only done about 33k). I
have not confirmed the price just yet but if service is about £120
(usually without any extras) and Belt change is as someone says £500
(twice as much I as thought it could be) then is Walkerville Garage
cheaper and is the work they do any good?

It would also be a lot closer to me than Cramlington.

4-500 seems going rate for a VAG TDi at a dealer. Frightening, isn't it?

The number of taxis outside should be enough to convince.... i've never
had any reason to complain about H & B.

Further to the tale of my Dad's Fabia, while Silbury Skoda were advising
a belt change, Benfield in Newcastle told him that it's only the diesels
that need to be changed, not the petrol engined models (his is petrol.)

This doesn't reflect well on Silbury at all. The car was bought there
and has always been serviced there. Not any more!

No, it doesn't. It has a chain which doesn't need renewing.
