A friend of mine told me about this stuff which you stick into the tank
after filling up which claims to clean out your engine and all the gungy
crap around the valves etc to generally keep it in better running condition?

Anyone used it?

Yes Buck it works a treat but you only need to use it once a year or so.

in days of old, each gas station had REDEX available by each pump FREE ! I
use 1 shot per tank full (90 litres) but watch the plugs, if they have white
deposits you are using too much REDEX.

Another tip, for a quick semi de-coke. Put a shot of REDEX in each
cylinder, leave overnight, fire up next day....eventually the white smoke
clears, but you need understanding neighbours!

What about weak mixture. Redex is termed as an upper cylinder lubricant
won't clear carbon.

Sorry Doc but an old wives tale.

Sorry but the jokes on you Redex will remove excess gum and carbon, it fell by
the wayside when fuel quality was good in the 60s through to 80s but now fuel
quality is to say the least questionable its back in vogue. In the past I have
treated stuck piston rings, sticky valves and duff injectors it dosen't always
free them but it is always worth a try.

I thought they charged 1p a shot!

Remember to drive the car into the garage. We once tried the
'instant decoke' by squirting Redex into the carb with the engine
running and lost sight of the back of the garage.

There is no joke so don't be flippant.
Question: Is Redex approved by all major motor manufacturers?

Cheap instant decoke:

Take the air filter off and look straight down the carb barrels.

Get a plant sprayer (about a litre), fill it with plain water and set
it to a fine mist.

Running a warm engine on a fast idle, gently spray a water mist into
the carb barrels. Repeat until your litre is gone.

If you don't believe me, either check the plugs before and after, or
use an endoscope. It won't magically fix broken rings or battered
bearings, but it certainly shifts carbon.
