Any ideas?
I am guessing that it is the engine mountings, if it does turn out to be
them, any hints/tips on replacing would be appreciated
Thanks

Is 5th the problem? This is a well known Golf gearbox weakness. Get
down to your local specialist, or if it helps I can recommend one.
What mileage has it done? I've often found boxes that have seen a
few miles will drop out of gear on overrun.

The car has done 95K miles, and had the gearbox replaced at about 60K.
The problem started with 5th, but it has since done it in 3rd then in
4th (said it was getting worse!).
How should I check the linkage bushes?
Thanks
Dan
Have you checked the oil level?
This is not straight forward on some models - the fill hole is below the
correct oil level!
The only way to be sure of the correct oil level is to drain the old and
fill with (I think) 2 litres of new through the speedo cable hole.
If you do change the oil, try a synthetic. Don't bother going to
Halfords for it, they only sell it in tiny bottles. When I changed mine
I bought Mobil 1 gear oil 'draft' for about the same cost as mineral oil
from the local Porsche dealer of all places. Note: the new oil must be
compatable with VW gearboxes due to the bearing materials used.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
Regards
Andy.

The most common problem is the bushes at the bottom of the gear lever.
These perish and cause the linkage to screw up. They're a bit of a
bitch to replace, as you have to drop the exhaust on the Mk 2. This
may not be the cause of the problem though.
Pick up a copy of Golf mag or Golf Xtreme - and phone a specialist
garage in there.

The bushes do tend get slack but this manifests itself as difficulty in
engaging gears, not jumping out. I've recently rebuilt the linkage on my
'86 GTI which made a huge improvement in the feel of the gearchange.
Could the jumping out of gear problem may be due to a worn 'detent'
mechanism, i.e. the spring arrangement which gives the gearbox it's
'click' into gear feel when you engage a gear? Try manually selcting
gears with your hand directly on the selector shaft at the gearbox.
Does it require a fair push to engage and release gears? If not then
there's not much of a spring actually holding the gear in place. My GTI
requires a very strong push to engage a gear, but I've tried the same
on a '91 GTI which required *much* less of a push.
A gear box specialist I've since spoken to told me VW chaged the design
of the detent around '88 and the newer ones are adjustable! So you
may be able to increase the tension on the detent spring if this is
indeed the problem. I wanted to do the opposite and reduce the pressure
required to select a gear, but can't 'cause mine's not adjustable.
Cheers,
Stuart.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my call for help. I have dug out my
old jack and tools and will hopefully get round to testing everything
this weekend. Until then my priorities have changed as I have gained a
problem with MY car :-( see the Lancia - gearbox oil? thread for
details.
