Hi,
I was approached on a petrol forecourt recently
by a fellow driver who was driving a VW Lupo,
a courtesy car, and could not find how to release
the fuel filler.
He was desperate to find out how to get the flap
open as he was completely out of petrol but after
5 minutes of searching I could not find it.
Two other customers offered to help but I noticed
that after serving myself and paying for the fuel another
five minutes later the three of them were still
unsuccessful and the driver was about to call the AA !!

Any VW driver able to enlighten me with the solution
to this puzzle ???

What you don't realise is: it's a throw-away car.

Once the petrol tank is empty, you put it in the skip and get a fresh
one.

OFFS, why didn't he just try the flap?!? It's a spring loaded flap and the
cap has a lock on it. Just shows that people are too used to buttons these
days.

Or if it's like the new Polo, it's on a latch. You press one end in and it
pops out. If it's like a Mk3 Golf, press one end and the other pops out.
Simple really...

I couldn't open the flap on a new hired Corsa (hideous car - found out
it didn't have ABS when a taxi suddenly cut across four lanes of traffic
in front of me). Turned out I'd accidentally tripped the "central"
locking, which on this particular specimen would *lock* all the doors
and flap quite happily but was reluctant to *unlock* anything except the
driver's door.

On my Polo Classic it is controlled by the central locking. Unlock the doors
then press the forward edge of the filler door and it flips open.

Shouldn't have been much of a problem - the 'solid steel' deadbolt
protecting the fuel fill cap, so proudly talked about in the manual,
actually locks into a a flimsy 1mm thick piece of plastic on the filler
flap.

The plastic is so flimsy that it can be easily broken by anyone with strong
fingers, thereby allowing anyone and everyone easy access to your fuel tank.

Some systems require two or three presses of the remote unlock button to
open the whole car - it's a security measure to open only the river's door
on one press.

It's funny how people refuse to read manuals, and even stranger how some car
rental companies remove them!

That was my problem - no manual. I had to ask someone at the filling
station, the shame of it :-(

With Avis cars, you usually find them shrink wrapped in the spare wheel
compartment. Just an FYI if anyone ever needs the manual.

Unless they have changed recently, there is no release, the flap just
pulls open.

Hello,

It's at the front on the dashboard by the kebab holder.

On my mums, you just get hold of the little bump at the back, and pull it
open ;-)

Nothing as fancy as a release lever on these :-)
