My Renault Megane 1.6 has some engine problem that my garage
cannot fix:
1) Cold engine start is difficult. Engine will start but then stall. Engine
needs stepping on gas to start.
2) Stationary RPM is unstable with cold and warm engine
3) Cold engine will stall when idling in front of red traffic light or when
shifting gears
4) Cold engine will stall when turning steering wheel to leave parking space
5) Exhaust makes puffing sounds when idling, cylinder failing to ignite from
time to time?
6) Above prbs occur when running on gasoline or LPG.
Otherwise engine runs fine, no problem when accelerating or speeding. Since
motor management reports no problems, and exhaust gases are within legal
limits, garage suggests the problem mut be in parts not monitored by motor
management. They suggest adjusting the in/outlet valves, could this really
be the cause?
thanks for any suggestions

To me, it sounds a bit like the idle speed is set way too low. Do you have
a rev counter? What speed does the car (attempt) to idle at?

David thanks,
Car is designed to idle at 750 RPM fixed, which is the RPM it is actually
doing when I look on the RPM counter on the dash. It does misfire a lot
however, cold or hot engine. When cold the engine is likely to stall when
stopping to yield to other traffic. The exhaust fumes stink of unburnt fuel
when cold. I've put new spark plugs, to no avail.
What to do?

Sounds like it's running a very rich mixture, or having ignition trouble.
I'd try to sort it quickish, because you don't really want to be pumping
out unburnt fuel - doesn't do your catalytic convertor any good!
I'd check:
1) that there's a fat, healthy spark at each plug lead (pull one off, stick
something metal in it and hold the metal about 5-10mm away from a good
earth point - NOT touching the metal! - then have someone fire it up while
you look for a decent spark.
2) check the air cleaner isn't too dirty - if the filter is extremely dirty
+ blocked, it's possible the motor isn't getting enough air, so the
resulting mixture is too rich.
Did these problems start when the LPG conversion was done? Or were they
evident before, or did they appear long after? Did it start happening
suddenly, or has it been getting gradually worse?
HTH
all the best
