When cold or left standing for several hours the oil pressure light takes
about 5 seconds to go out after starting, if the engine is just left
standing for about 30 minutes or so the oil light goes out pretty much
instantaneously.
It sounds to me like the oil system is loosing its prime and draining back
into the sump. I'm not familiar with these engines so I wonder if this is a
standard ''feature,'' or is there a one way/anti syphon valve to look at?
The oil filter looks like a cartridge jobby at the rear of the engine - the
last time I changed a filter like this in a car was 30 years ago on a BMC A
series. I'm going to try buying a new genuine oil filter from Vauxhall, but
can't believe that I've got to start mucking around with cartridge filters -
what are Vauxhall playing at!
I'd be grateful for comments from those with specific experience of these
engines thanks.
Julian.
Don't they have a two stage switch so that when it's hot it expects higher
pressure?
The van is quite new to me, I hardly know anything about. I think I'll
invest in a Haynes - unless there's a better info source?
Julian.
Try an oil change first. You will find that this type is a bit cleaner than
the spin on type! The oil falls back down in the housing, and you don't get
oil running down your arm/the engine. The type of filter you are
experiencing is what makers such as Vauxhall and Ford are going back to !!
The Americans re-started it, I believe, something to do with pollution, and
their garages probably welcomed it, out there they have to have filter
crushers to get any oil out that is possible, with the paper only type that
is easier and the paper can be burnt or go into landfill more easily than if
it has a metal can around it.
Standard feature.
Most engines with catridge filters will drain back over night.

Same as every other manufacturer. Cutting down on contaminated/hazardous
waste.
OK, thanks. I got a Vauxhall filter today and changed it - actually it was
easy and I didn't spill one drop of oil, so I take back all I previously
said!
I'll not worry about it any longer if it's a normal feature.
Cheers Julian.
No.
Just a bog standard low pressure switch.
